VBAC

GD and VBAC

I have GD, so I won't be allowed to go past my due date. I REALLY want a VBAC though.

With #1 I had a little high blood pressure and was just ready to be done. So dr. induced me 4 days before my due date.  I never got past a 6 after 17 hours of labor.  So we did a c/section. Once DS was born, I became septic  and probably close to dying if my dr hadn't been on top of things.

I just feel like there is some connection between the CS and the sepsis.  So if I CAN VBAC this time, it'll all be easier.  My recovery after that sepsis episode was by far the worst part of having a baby!

On another note, this LO has CCAM (congenital birth defect). He will be in the NICU after birth for a bit.  One of my college friends is a NICU nurse at the same hospital where I will deliver. She says VBAC is a waste of time unless your baby was breech the first time.  Anyone have any experience with that?

I just want this time to be better!

  • Wow, I can't believe your friend told you that!  That makes me so upset!  She clearly hasn't seen very many VBACs, nor has she done very much research.  As far as I am concerned, if there is no medical reason to have a RCS, I'll be having a VBAC, despite a failed induction (stuck at 9cm for 6 hours, followed by an epi, "distressing heart tones" and a c/s).  I would ignore her comment.

I hope you have a successful VBAC, it sounds like your recovery from the c/s was awful!

  • It was MORE than awful.  Yet, I still want another kid! This will be the last one though.

I am going to discuss it more with my dr and see if we can set the RCS date as late as possible before my due date...then if I don't go into labor on my own, we'll RCS. No inducing me since I already had one CS...are their other options for that?

  • I have GD and I'm trying for a VBAC. I had a c-section scheduled for the 13th and today convinced my doctor to let me go a week past my due date since my GD is well controlled. They did a growth U/S on Tuesday, and the baby isn't big at all, so he agreed to give me until the 20th before I have to have a RCS. I was pretty happy with that.

  • Minus the near death experience and CCAM, my story sounds like yours.

I was induced for very borderline pre-e that other OBs have told me was not necessary, stalling out after 17 hours of labor, and the GD with the 2nd pg. That's me exactly. Baby was NOT breech, just FTP.

My GD was well controlled by diet, so there was no need to have the baby on or before the due date - my OB was comfortable with me going to 41wk 3d and I had scheduled a rcs for that day. DS decided he was ready at 41wk2d, and he arrived by vbac. One thing that makes me laugh is how my old OB was going on about "HOW LONG" I'd been in labor. Made 17hr seem like a million years. I'm sure it was for her since she wanted to get home. With my vbac I had 29 hours of labor, 24 of those in the hospital.

And I have to say if that's the attitude of the nursing staff I would not want to give birth there. I understand that your baby has a known issue, so you probably need to pick your hospital based on the nicu care for him rather than for what would be best for you. But neither your doctor nor your hospital sound particularly supportive of vbac.

However, I also think that you wanting a better birth experience is a totally healthy mindset to have. Every time I felt like something went better than the first time, it was a little lift, like I met a little goal. So even if I had ended up with a c/s, I think I would have been in a better mental place because I picked a hospital with better post-c/s policies, more baby-friendly, etc.
