Recommend your diaper-bag friendly camera

So DH has the mother of all DSLR cameras- it is huge and impractical and just not something that I can tote along with me to catch all the little cute pics.

For my birthday he has offered to buy me a point and shoot that I can keep in my diaper bag. He bought me a Fuji XP15 but my night time pics are turning out terrible. Maybe I just have to mess around with the settings so more but does anyone have one they can recommend?

Here's what I'm looking for:

Under $200.

Decent zoom.

Video camera on it too.

Rugged- preferably waterproof/water resistant (I am clumsy and have bad luck)

Fairly good quality pics (I am noticing a big difference versus the DSLR pics which I expect but would still like decent quality)

 Thanks

  • I'm the wrong person to ask, I usually just take pic/vids with my cell! lol

  • My MIL has an Olympus Stylus Tough. It's waterproof to 33 ft and I know it takes video. It's pretty compact and I know hers has survived some hard knocks.

I have no idea where it lies in terms of cost, sorry.

    HTH!

  • I'm the wrong person to ask because I'll advocate for the DSLR. It's either that or my iPhone. I know most point and shoots take decent photos, but I think in the long run you may appreciate the quality of the DSLR photos, even for the quick "little" things.

  • I have an Olympus (I don't remember the model).  I got it several years ago and it looks like their current equivalent is the Tough series.  Mine is water/shock/and cold proof.  The shock came in handy when I had it sitting in my lap and stood up over concrete on the honeymoon we bought it for. Nothing but a scratch.

Watch clearance sales.  Mine was the pervious year model and less than $100.  New of the same model were running about $300+.

The problem is I just don't have enough hands. In almost 4 months I have taken maybe 10 pics of DS outside and 300+ in the house. I have a big diaper bag and the car seat or him in my arms and the DSLR is in a big bag (DH insists it be carried in the bag as it was expensive. This weekend DS went to a parade, tractor pull and fair and /i have no pics because I didn't want to carefully carry around an expensive camera all day. The day time pics I took today were okay so I think I'll keep the fuji.
