how soon after walking did you buy shoes?

my lo just started walking these past few weeks and I feel that I should get him used to the feel of shoes, when did you buy shoes for your lo and have them start wearing them?  did you have them walk around with them inside first to practice?

Re: how soon after walking did you buy shoes?

  • I started putting DS in shoes all the time right when he started taking his first steps. Before that, I would often put him in shoes when we were away from home, just to get used to them.

  • My LO already had shoes, we used Robeez at that point.  We always had her wear shoes when we were out, but never at home.  I guess after she started walking more we switched to hard soled shoes and she's done fine in any kind of shoe.

  • We put LO in shoes about a week after she started walking. We got her really soft and flexible ones to wear first so she got used to the feel of them.

  • I bought DS his first pair of shoes right after he started walking.  We use the flexible early walker shoes from Stride Rite.  He likes them and they fit his chubby feet well.  I only put shoes on him when we leave the house.

  • At first we only did real shoes if we were going somewhere that we felt he needed them to protect his feet if he wanted to wander a bit.  At home and when we were at people's houses we did bare feet, socks, or leather soled crib shoes.  I didn't want to put shoes on his feet all the time until he got really steady.  I've always heard that it's better for them to learn to walk barefoot.

    Us too.

  • I bought some soft soled shoes once she started taking baby steps.  She doesn't even notice that she's wearing them.

You want to avoid the hard soled shoes for the first several months of walking.  The soft soled ones are the next best thing to walking barefoot and barefoot is best for their developing foot and leg muscles.

This is what we did as well.

  • We just ordered Lucy's sneakers from Stride Rite this past week (the Abby Cadabby beginning walker shoes).  We had to order them because she's small - she needed a size 2.5, which they don't normally sell.  She's always worn shoes since she started pulling up and walking, since she'd be cruising at daycare and I wanted her to have shoes, but they were just the cheap Carters/Walmart cute shoes.  Her sneakers will be here in a few days.

This.  DS took his first steps on a Thursday, Monday I went to stride rite and got him the flexible sneakers.  The easiest way for them to learn to walk is bare foot, so when he was first learning, I only put shoes on him if we were leaving the house.

  • I put shoes on him for show for a long time but as soon as he started walking with assistance I put shoes on him all the time.

  • We put shoes on DS since he was about 6 months old. I felt like they kept his feet warmer when it was getting cold.
