anyone else taking a calcium supplement with their prenatal?

At my last OB appt my Dr recommended me taking a calcium supplement along with my prenatal.  Anyone else doing this?

Re: anyone else taking a calcium supplement with their prenatal?

  • Yes, but not at the same time. One in the AM (Prenatal) and one (Calcium) in the PM. YOur body can only use so much calcium at one time.

  • I don't really take prenatals, but here's what I do do. I take calcium+D in the morning and evening. At lunchtime I take a women's multivitamin, folic acid, DHA, and iron.

  • Good point.  I have been taking them together.  Maybe I will switch the calcium to the am.

Calcium also interferes with the body's absorption of iron, so that's another reason to spread them out.

  • Yes, my OB recommended it too, plus it's helping with cramps in my calves.

  • I take 2 calcium citrate +D3 in the morning with my prenatal and another 2 in the evening so that my calcium is 800 mgs... Plus I supplement with a yogurt and cereal.. so that my calcium level is at the daily value...

  • I'm another who takes calcium in the AM and my prenatal in the evening.  My mom has severe osteoporosis, and I've seen her suffer many breaks at such a young age due to this office disease.  So, I'm not taking any chances.

  • My OB is having me take calcium and vitamin D in addition to my prenatal. She also recently put me on an iron supplement as my hemoglobin levels are low.

  • Yes, I take my prenatals and a supplement of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. I always take it with food because if I don't it gives me nausea.

  • I am also taking an extra calcium pill on top of my materna.. doc recommended that I should also up my Vit. D intake to 2000UI,

Taking Vit D helps your body absorb the calcium, so check with your doc before adding any vitamins to your routine.
