Bath vs shower

Hopefully this hasn't been asked or discussed ad nauseaum on here.

But what age do kids generally transition to taking a shower?

My 4.5 year old is perfectly content sitting in the tub for like an hour with her sister.  I can't imagine that changing soon, I don't know if it is because she hates water on her face or that she enjoys playing in the tub with her little sister, just wondering when other kids are changing over.

Re: Bath vs shower

  • DD is 3.5 and still takes a bath, she has no interest in a shower.

  • For the longest time, DD was afraid of the bath, so she only ever took showers. Now, she does like the bath, but it's more of a playtime thing for her - she'll stay in there forever, but whines about soap/shampoo. So we use baths for play and showers for getting clean (meaning she only gets a few baths a month, and takes showers the rest of the time).

  • DS takes both. If we have the time he can take a bath and play for as long as he wants to. If we are short on time he gets a quick shower.

  • DS is almost 3.5 and takes a shower every night.  He started wanting it on his own around 3 to "be like daddy".  A few times a month he takes a bath, gets a good soak and have extra time to play

  • All of my kids still take baths. They are 5 1/2, 3 1/2, and 15 months. My oldest daughter has taken a shower a few times, but still prefers to take a bath. They're more fun! My 3 1/2 year old son has no interest in a shower whatsoever.

  • DD is almost 3.5 and usually takes showers and has for the last year or so.  I always give her a choice of shower or bath and 90% of the time she chooses shower.

  • DD started showers for eczema (better to no sit in soapy water).  This was at 3. She takes mostly showers but sometimes a bath--sometimes I stick the boys in the shower too.

  • DD has taken showers with me since she was 6mos and has rarely taken baths. Baths are more for "inside swimming" than getting clean, lol. She can clean herself as well as I do, with the exception of her hair, so she can take one herself if she needs to but she's still normally with me or DH.

  • Every kid is different. I say that cause DS1 has been taking showers since he was 3.5 years old.  He loves taking showers.

DS2 HATES taking showers, cause he doesn't like the sensation of water falling on his head.  So, he still takes baths.  He's 3.  Eventually, he'll have to come around and take showers.  I'll probably push it more when he's closer to 4 (next year).

  • My kids love baths, but they love showers too. There have been many phases where DD would not take a bath or would not take a shower, so she kind of flip flips back and forth. But it's about 10000x easier to get her hair washed in the shower. She HATES it in the bathtub and screams about the water in her face. But somehow when that water is coming from the shower it's fine. I don't get it, but that's the way she is.

  • My 4yr old takes baths with her sister. She did ask once, maybe a month ago, to take a bath by herself. I think it was just so she could have room to pretend swim.

We use the adjustable shower head just to rinse them off at the end.

  • My DD is 3 and has been doing both baths and showers for quite a while, at least a year.  She prefers the bath play time, so she'll opt for that if there's time.  However, when time is limited we do a shower.  She can wash her body herself with a soapy bath puff (I put on the soap), and then I reach in and wash her hair and she screams bloody murder (but she does that in the bath, too).  We replaced our stationary shower head with a hand-held type and it's a life saver for rinsing off all the soap.  Sometimes she gets in with me when I take a shower.  Even when she was an infant, I would sometimes take her in the shower with me for a quick wash, then hand her out to DH to dry while I finished my own shower.

  • DD1 is pushing 4 and still takes baths. Over the summer, we'd sometimes give the girls outdoor showers after the beach, but DD1 doesn't like them and much prefers baths. I don't push the issue because I have to give DD2 a bath anyway, so I might as well bathe them together.

  • I just started DD1 on showers, she'd stay in the bath for hours if I let her. It got to be too long of a process.
