DH just picked up our new puppy and is bringing him home. They'll be here in about 3 hours.
Those with dogs, can you remind me how long it takes to house train a puppy. If memory is serving my correctly, it had taken us 3 days to house train our Springer spaniel when he was a puppy. This new puppy is a lab.
Any other suggestions for introducing puppy to our family? I'm pretty excited about training a puppy again!!!
Re: DH picked up our puppy!
Totally depends on the dog - I say that it took about a week to house train our dog, but we only had two accidents (and one was *totally* our fault) the whole time. It took about a week to bell train him (though we did that later) so he'd ring a bell on the door if he needed to go out.
My trainer suggests splitting your time 1/3 with just the new puppy and you, 1/3 withOUT the new puppy (puppy's in his crate), 1/3 everyone all together. Good luck with your training! We've been doing obedience training for three years and love it! I hope to compete him soon (once I can manage that with a toddler! :P).
3 days to housebreak? I apparently need your method.
I think it takes a couple weeks to get them to the stage where they will tell you they need to go out or get them into a routine where they know when and where they are supposed to potty. For me, the first 2 - 4 weeks consist of taking them out on a very consistent schedule, and watching them like a hawk to make sure I catch them and get them outside if they look like they're thinking about going.
I think it takes a couple of months to get them to the point where they will hold it until you let them out.
This also depends on the age of the pup. With my younger dog, he could only hold it for 3 - 4 hours at a time, and I think I had to take him out in the middle of the night for at least week. He was 12 weeks old when we got him. He would still have occasional accidents at 6 mo, but was definitely reliable by 8 mo when I went back to teaching after the summer.
Good luck! Housebreaking a puppy is exhausting, but at least it doesn't last as long as having a newborn!
The days was with our Springer Spaniel.....he was about 13 weeks old when we got him. He had about three accidents in the house. We had crate trained him at night. I have a feeling he may have learned a bit from our older dog (who took longer than 3 days.........now that I'm thinking about it, I think it was a couple - few weeks, but we didn't crate train him at first). Our dogs also had spent quite a bit of time outside during the day, though. I don't know if that makes a difference.
I'll expect it to take longer than 3 days with this one, then:)
