anyone have experience with the neighborhood charter school?

DH wants to rent our condo and buy a house.  He is looking all over ITP  but he thinks he really likes grant park.  I've heard it is really hard to get into the neighborhood charter school.  any suggestions?

Re: anyone have experience with the neighborhood charter school?

  • I lived in GP for 8 years (we still own our house there) and I am a realtor that specializes in that area.  It is not tough to get into NCS right now, you just need to make sure you are in the first tier district.  Down the road it may get more difficult as more people choose to send their kids there.  It is a great school!  There is also a great charter middle school in Ormewood.  There is another charter school in the area (Imagine Wesley) that is also excellent, and easier to get into.

I am happy to help with your home search or answer any more questions you may have.  Grant Park is such a wonderful, family-friendly neighborhood.  They have a really active parent group with playgroups arranged by the age of your child, plus tons of great family activities throughout the year.

  • Ditto Alix.  We've lived in Grant Park for 7 years and as long as you're in the first tier area and meet all the deadlines, you should be fine.  The GPNA (neighborhood association) does a lot with the charter school assisting with fundraising, etc.  DH and I visited the school during one of the events and were really impressed with the administration and faculty.  The great thing about it is that parents are very involved in the school and neighborhood.

I'm glad to answer any questions as well, or sell you our house as it's for sale, haha!

Just a plug for Carrie's house--it's really beautiful, gated, and has an awesome set-up for kids right across from the park!!

  • I am hoping to get into NCS as well.  Although I am in Zone 1, I am still super stressed about not getting in.  I have heard, in years past, of very little spots open because of siblings and teacher's kids.  My fingers are crossed because it is an excellent school in many ways.

Can I ask what you all are doing for Pre-k?  Where are you looking?  There is a Pre-K program that is very convenient at our current daycare.  But we are open to other options.  I know this is a little off topic so thank you!

  • ladies, Thanks for your responses.

I am glad you mentioned making sure we are in zone 1.  DH is terrible about reading maps so I have been double checking everything since you said this.

LadybugDZ.  we are currently planning on keeping Elliot at our current school for PreK.  It is in the highlands but still convenient for us if we are still working a the same jobs and it will still be one drop off for both kids.

I have a friend from work that sent her son to Parkside for PreK and they do have two classes but I don't think I want to do that.

I forgot to say that this is what I had read before too.  But it was one current review on the great schools website.  I hadn't heard from anyone that had had it happen before.

Ladybug DZ I was trying to think of  viable options for alternatives if NCS didn't work out and I am a bit stumped.  I thought of applying ot a private school and if we didn't get into NCS we would pay for private until we could get in.  Not the best idea really though.

  • We go to private preschool in Morningside and will stay there through pre-K.  They also have a kindergarten if we're still living here and we don't get into the NCS.

Just like Alix suggested, Imagine Wesley has great reviews and I plan on applying there as well.  Parkside will be my third choice.  I have heard that Parkside is making great strides to improve and they have a kick-a$$ principle that is making great changes, for the better.  I have heard that Parkside's Pre-K program is actually competitive to get in to.  It's that good.

Our current daycare offers pre-k and since our younger son goes to the same daycare, the easy option would be to leave my DD there.  One drop off.  Easy peasy.  However I am started to consider Parkside's Pre-K program.
