if you have "adult" furniture

Did you wait until the kids were older to purchase it?

If not, How did you make it through the kids being small? Slip covers? Microfiber? A particular color or fabric?

We have a small house and live in the city. All of our friends seem to have 'nice' furniture and I just can't get over the hump. I always tend to be practical thinking the rug and couch are going to get ruined. Just last week my daughter spilled an 8oz pediasure on the couch!

Help, I'd really like to upgrade for more style!

    We are choosing not to buy adult furniture until the kids are older. We don't allow drinks outside the dining room, but the baby still spits up on the couch. We got our couches from CL for $100, it is decent enough and I don't have to feel like such a waste if it gets dirty.

    We had nice Ethan Allen furniture before DS was born.  We did not allow food/drinks out of the kitchen.  Furniture is fine and DS is now 5.  We did put our nice coffee table away and buy an inexpensive leather ottoman from Overstock.com to use as a coffee table because when he was little we were afraid he would smack his face on the sharp corners.  I am glad I did that because he would have for sure whacked himself on that table at some point.  The ottoman is now ready to be retired....the kids all like to abuse that when they come over.  I got my $150 worth on the ottoman and told DH I am getting rid of it.  I think for the most part it depends on your house rules.  If you don't allow food/drinks in your living room you should have no issues IMO.

    We have a really nice couch, but it has a busy pattern and is stain treated so that clean up is pretty easy.  I won't be buying a solid color couch for awhile.  Even though I don't allow food out of the kitchen, they have puked on my couch more times than I can remember (even when I cover it up!).  It also has loose, down filled pillows along the back that are pretty indestructible.

    We have one nice room and the kids know to be careful in it -- there's no food allowed in it, toys must be tidied away as soon as play ends, and no shoes on the furniture.  I didn't want a room that was off limits so I bought slipcovered furniture that is easy to wash.

    We purchased "sturdy" couches that are microfiber and refinished our coffee table with a polyurethane seal, but also made sure to teach our DD that food and drinks need to stay on the kitchen table where we eat and drink.  DH and I follow that rule too, and only allow water outside of the kitchen (also helps reduce the risk of bugs in the house)
