C-sections

Question about Internals and RCS

If you have a repeat C-section, does your doctor still have to do internals? (I hated this part of my last pregnancy)

Re: Question about Internals and RCS

  • I had one at 36 weeks (the day I had him) and that was to see if I was dilated at all to try for a VBAC.

  • My dr still did one at 36 weeks to do the group b strep test, but other than that I requested not to have them done. Otherwise they would have done them. (no thanks)

  • You don't need internals at all.  With or without a C-section.  I opted out of them the first time around and will next time, even though I'm planning for a VBAC.

  • I know that I will still have to do the swab for strep--and have no problem with that. I just want to make sure I don't have to do the internals.  I'll make sure my doctor knows that I don't want them done. Thanks guys!

  • Nope, never got any internals with my last 3 kids. One of my docs actually yelled at their assistant for making me get undressed and get ready for an internal.

I asked if she was sure I was supposed to because I was a RCS patient and she had me get undressed anyway.

I could hear the doc lay into her outside the door lol

  • My dr. did one at 36 weeks after doing the GSB. But other than that they told me they won't do them because they don't want to encourage things to happen down there. Hope that helps...I was excited when they told me that lol.

  • You never HAVE to have an internal provided you are having a healthy pregnancy. Just say, "No thanks!"

You know, my MW let me do my own swab. I got to go in the bathroom and do it in private. It was wonderful...well not wonderful, but so much better. I did love the MWs.

  • I just asked my OB about this yesterday.  I am having a scheduled CS with this babe because she's breech, first was a normal vag delivery.  He did the GBS test yesterday but no internal and says he likes to do one internal on his scheduled CS patients at 38 wks "just to make sure" we aren't walking around 4-5 cm dilated, thus making a c-section a little trickier to get to if we were to go into labor prior to our scheduled date.

  • Totally depends on your doctor.  I have had 3 scheduled c-sections with 3 different doctors from the same practice. I didn't have any internals for DS1 or DS2. I had 2 internals with DS3 - one at 32 weeks just because it felt like he was going to fall out for some reason and one at 37 weeks because that is what the doctor liked to do to make sure I wasn't too dialated which I wasn't at all. Internals suck!!! They hurt sooooo bad.

  • I had planned a natural birth (didn't happen) and I still didn't have any internals. As the doctor said, at this point, either you're dilated or you're not. Both would be normal, and it won't tell you much- you can be slightly dilated for weeks, or go from nothing to 10 within hours.
