C-sections

happen to anyone else??

had to have a c-section after little one wasn't ready to come vaginally.  first epidural wore off in the middle of pushing.  it was no big deal. my legs were numb but other than that i felt great.  i assumed the same would be the case for the c-section.  with my second epidural i was no longer able to function.  i was numb all the way up to my shoulders and felt that i couldn't breathe.  i had to have a tube put down my throat and i assume a machine to breathe for me.  i remember laying there telling them i couldn't breathe when they were putting the oxygen mask on me.  i then remember them talking saying they were going to have to intubate (sp?) and then I was out.  My question- did anyone else feel numb this high?  This concerns me because an epidural pretty much freezes your muscles and the heart and lungs are muscles.  Could this have been bad??  I just wonder if this is common..

  • I could've written this exact post.  The same thing happened to me.  Are you sure it was another epidural or a spinal??  A spinal completely parazlyzes so it felt completely different than my epidural.  Anyways, the doctor told me after it was a complication rarely seen where instead of just numbing below the chest it 'accidentally' travels upwards as well.  I couldn't breathe or speak so they had to intubate me and put me under.  Later, my friends mother (who is also a dr) said she thought the anesthesiologist just put the spinal too high ie in the wrong spot!!!!  So, no it's not normal or common but does happen.

  • They actually did a spinal tap. I found out that there was a difference between a spinal tap and an epidural. My first c-section they couldn't get either one to work because I have a tricky spine. With my second, he was able to get the spinal tap done and I kept telling them that I could not breathe but they told me it was normal and that they would be worried if I wasn't able to talk at all. Weird.

Not a spinal tap, spinal anesthesia. Spinal taps (aka lumbar puncture) takes cerebrospinal fluid out to test it.

OP I had a similar reaction, but not as severe. My spinal went too high- I couldn't feel my arms, I couldn't swallow or talk, and I started to feel like I couldn't breathe. Thankfully it was over soon, and sitting up helped.

It *could* have been bad, but that's why you are so closely monitored by the anesthesiologist. Sounds scary =( I'm sorry you had to go through that.

  • Couldnt talk and could barely swallow. I kept falling asleep on the table. But I remember one of the doctor sitting next to me and rubbing my head the whole time.
