We're going to Florida at the end of next month and we're flying Southwest. They recommend buying an "infant fare" so LO can have their own seat and fly in the carseat. For those mom's who have flown with a LO is this really necessary?
That is totally uneccessary in my opinion. I would enjoy this time now while they can be in your lap and you do not have to pay extra for LO to have a seat.
At 3 months old we flew non stop (2 hours) on Frontier Airlines and LO sat in my lap. He likes sitting in laps and doesn't like his carseat. We gate checked the carseat (free). He had no problems on the trip there or back. There was a 5 month old on the flight and she got a little fussy, but she liked one of the toys we brought and that distracted her. Have LO suck on a paci or nurse/bottle feed during take off and landing to help with the changes in air pressure.
Perfect - I figured it was not necessary! D will be 5 months old during the flight so we'll be sure to bring toys to distract her. And of course a bottle or two. Luckily the flight is only 2.5 hours.
We will be flying with our 5 month old in October, and we did purchase a seat for her. We did it mostly because our flight is 5 1/2 hours, and she likes to sleep in her car seat. It is safer too, and I know we will appreciate the extra space even if I do end up holding her a lot. We probably wouldn't have on a shorter flight.
I just flew with DD last week and we brought her on our lap. We also checked the snap and go base, car seat, and car seat base at the gate for free. Also, once you get to the gate, you can ask the desk attendant if there are any open seats on your flight. If there are, they will probably allow you to bring the car seat on to put LO in. Otherwise, like I said, just gate check it. She cried in the airport (mostly because we were holding off feeding her a little) and then slept on the entire flight (~2 hours) both times. Super easy.
I'm glad you asked this. I just found out this morning that we'll be flying with DS this week for family reasons. I'm stressing over how it's going to work and there's a chance it could just be just me and DS. It's a 3 hour flight with a possible stop or plane change. We don't really know yet.
Perfect - thanks for all the responses. I think if it were a longer flight I'd buy her a seat, but since it's pretty quick and easy we'll just have her on our lap. I'm so nervous for this experience!
