TTC after 35

Just had my first fertility acupuncture appointment today . . .

I'm going to start out going 2x a week (fortunately he's nearby(!)).

My question is as follows:  the acupuncturist is also custom-mixing a Chinese herb tea for me.  I think he probably knows what he's doing, since he was an MD in China and has been doing this a long time.  But has anyone's gyno or RE warned them against taking Chinese herbs?  Any in particular to be cautious about?  Obviously I would go off them before doing another cycle of Clomid or any other fertility drug.  I'll ask my gyno next time I see her as well but in the meantime I'd love any info you guys might have.  TIA!

Re: Just had my first fertility acupuncture appointment today . . .

  • I'm going to an acupuncturist and taking herbs too (not in a tea form, a powder form I put in water).  I have some worries, too, mostly about when to quit the herbs if I think I'm pregnant (I'm in the 2ww right now, what if I'm pregnant?  But I'm still taking them until I get a BFP).  I am following a fertility book that highly recommends acupuncture and herbs (especially since I am AMA), if prescribed by someone who knows what they are doing. The statistics are pretty amazing as far as enhancing fertility, and I haven't read about the particular herbs I am on causing any problems.

I think the only caution is not to underestimate how powerful the herbs can be.  I had to scale back how much I was taking.  My sister has had the same experience, she has some pretty crazy gynecological issues, and herbs have really helped, but she had to play around to find the right dosage.

I'll be curious to hear what else you find out. I'm guessing a lot of American-trained doctors are against anything not cooked up by a pharmaceutical company, so I'd love to hear what your gynocologist says, etc.

  • Mine gave me herbs in pill form, but I started getting nervous about taking them, so I only took them for two weeks before ovulation, and then didn't take them in the 2ww.

That could be a good strategy.  When I pick up the herbs on Tuesday I'll definitely ask the acupuncturist what he thinks, and I'll ask my gyno the same (I'm seeing her soon as well for a follow-up ultrasound -- my last (first) round of Clomid gave me a small cyst she wants to make sure has gone away before I do another round).  My acupuncturist has also said he'll give me a list of everything in the tea, which will let me do some of my own research regarding whether there's any suspicion that any of it causes birth defects.  I feel like there has to be a way to integrate the two types of medicine.
