Thrush Questions.

So little Natalie has thrush and I'm starting to feel it too.. We went to the pedi today and got a script for her and I called my OB for one for me, but it wasn't in yet when I went to pick up Natalies, so I actually don't even know what they sent in for me.

1)If you treated LO with Nystatin, did you actually spread it around their mouth? What did you use to do this with? And how much did you use per treatment. The bottle says 1ml in each cheek 4x per day, but the pedi told me to spread it around her mouth.. which no one ever told me to do when I got thrush with Eve (eve never had the spots) And 1ml is more than enough to coat Nat's whole mouth.. I think 2 would be overkill.

2)Did you treat yourself with nystatin or diflucan or something else? I remember reading and/or the pedi telling me with Eve that nystatin worked better for it, but our new pedi today told me that diflucan is better to take because Nat will actually get some of it through the breastmilk so it will help to treat her.

Re: Thrush Questions.

  • Evan had thrush which we treated with Nystatin.  We were told to use q-tips to spread it around his mouth.  There was no way to measure so we just made certain that everything was covered -  his cheeks, tongue, etc.

  • we got nystatin for sophie and i just put it in her cheeks.  for me i got diflucan and it was not the once a day dose.  i hate taking pills and am so bad at it
  • 1. No, I just squirted a bit in.  They don't swallow right away anyway so it should coat the mouth just fine.  LC told me to do it after each feeding the first few days which is more than just 4 times a day.  Thrush sucks, hit it hard and fast.

    2. I ended up needing a specially compounded ointment.  Normal nystatin has lanolin in it......of course.  So lucky me.  But I ended up with APNO due to the combo of the thrush and allergic reaction I had going on which is anti-thush, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory meds mixed in to an ointment base that I then applied after each feeding as well.
