How much allowance for a 6 year old?

I'd like to start giving my son an allowance.  I'd like to teach him to spend, save and donate.  I was thinking $10 a week - and he would save half, spend 40% and donate 10%.  Do you think that is too much money for a 6 year old?

  • We do $7/week. $1/day. DD is allowed to keep $3 in her wallet, bank $3 for something she's saving for (we go online, pick an item, print the pic of what she wants and the amount and keep it near her bank), and put $1 in the collection basket at church.

  • My 7 y/o only gets a dollar a week.

  • We do $2 a week, 1 to spend and 1 to save.
  • Only if she does her chores with a good attitude will she get $7 ($1 for every day) otherwise she gets a few dollars.

  • Evan gets $5 / week.  He has to vacuum the living room rug daily and clear the table after dinner.

  • We have a chore chart.  I make a grid with 100 squares.  Every square is worth .25.  When he finishes the chart he gets $25.  Sometimes it takes him a months, sometimes it takes him 3, but he doesn't get his money until he finishes the charts with actual real chores.

I love this idea. Is there a template online or did you make it up yourself?

  • We also do a chore chart (from amazon). It's a magnetic white board, so I wrote in particular chores (make bed, help clean up toys, put dishes in dishwasher, something extra when specifically asked - like helping clean his sister's mess, etc.) In a 1 week period he needs to earn 15 stars to receive $5 allowance.
  • Right now, we don't do any.  I'm not against it though.

  • We only give 3$/week.  I guess we need to keep up with the times.  To earn it she has to empty the laundry hampers and sort the laundry 3X a week.  She really doesn't need to purchase anything for herself so she saves most of it.  We haven't started encouraging her to donate money but rather her things...clothes, toys, books that she no longer uses that would fill up landfills if they weren't donated.
