Nap question

Hi everyone!  I know not many people post on this board anymore :(, but I am not part of the FB group, so I wanted to ask a question here.

What age was your LO when they stopped napping?  My LO is almost 3 and has always been a good napper...until recently.  He will lay in his bed for the entire time he should be napping and just talk/sing/do anything but sleep.  He doesn't get out of his bed (I can see him on our video monitor), so at least he is "resting" a bit, but he won't sleep!  HELP, I do not want him to stop napping at this age.  I thought I had at least another year of him napping.

Re: Nap question

  • DD isn't there yet, but I know my sister still had "quiet time" with her DS up until he was maybe 4 or so, I think she just kept with it as long as he seemed willing, it gave her some time to do something at home and gave him some downtime.  He stopped napping really early though, I think he was maybe 2 1/2 or so when he gave up napping for good.

  • Kids grow out of naps at different rates but to preserve their sanity and yours, quiet time like in a darkened room and quiet can help make the evening transition much easier.  At daycare all children have to have quiet or nap time until they are school aged and with DS1 that is what I did.  DS2 is 2y 5m now and he naps 1-2 hours the majority of the time if not he talks to himself in bed.  Also we have tried to go without naps or quiet time and it gets really ugly.

  • O gave up nap time around 22 months.  I think a big part of it, however, was that she has been at home with DH and he didn't really enforce a schedule or the whole nap time thing.  I'm wondering what is going to happen when she starts day care next month and they expect her to nap from 1 to 3.
  • I'm not in this situation yet, DS still takes two naps a day, he's 13 months. But, I did ask his pedi this question at his one-year check-up. She said that different children stop taking naps at different ages. She said some kids still take two naps when they're 4, and some kids stop taking naps altogether when they're 2. So I guess it just depends on the kid.

  • DS was never a consistent napper as an infant.  He napped each afternoon for ~2 hrs until he was 23 mos.  When he learned to climb out of his crib, he stopped napping.  That said, he sleeps really well at night.  So it's a trade off for us.

Anyway, at first we enforced quiet time.  Now, we have him "rest" if he's having an off day or one of us just needs a break.  Otherwise, we don't bother even laying him down..
