Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Re: Is this safe.

  • My pedi said no to all Vicks type items until LO is 2.  We have the frog cool mist humidifier and it works well with just plain water.  He's had a nasty cold the last 10 days or so and it has helped during his naps and at night.  And we use the nose frida.

  • I wouldn't use it.  A cool mist humidifier w/plain water is best.  If you want some sort of "vapor" I will put a little dab of infant vapor rub on the inside chest area of LO's clothing.

  • I would try this:

    https://www.amazon.com/Vicks-Soothing-Waterless-Vaporizer-Nightlight/dp/B004U532P6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315608392&sr=8-1

    With this:

    https://www.kaz.com/kaz/humidifiers/products/vicks-pediatric-vapopads-vbr-5/?WT.mc_id=amazonCSE&WT.srch=1

Our pediatrician said the Pediatric Vapopads are ok to use with a baby.  They have the same ingredients as the Vicks Baby Rub, which can be used on babies 3 months and older.

We've used the above for every cold DS has gotten (which is A LOT - he's in daycare), and they REALLY help.  GL!

I would avoid vapor rub, even if its designed for babies, unless directly recommended by a doctor...

I see where you're coming from, but that article you referenced talks directly to Vicks VapoRub not being used on children under 2.  That's because it contains menthol - the ingredient that can irritate airways (as mentioned in the article).

Vicks BABY Rub, however, does not contain menthol.  It contains eucalyptus and rosemary.  My doctor gave us the green light on BABY rub when DS was 3 months old - I think you'd be hard pressed to find a doctor that didn't say this particular product was OK.  The Pediatric Vapor Pads I mentioned in my OP are made of the same ingredients...and don't contain menthol.

Although, to be on the safe side, it never hurts to check with your pediatrician, like PP said.  GL!

  • We use a cool mist humidifire in Lil D's room.  And when he is really congested, I put some Johnson's Soothing Vapor Bath in some warm bath water...that seems to help as well.

  • I used Vick's Vaporizer in a humidifier when he was a few months old.  I didn't know I wasn't supposed to...
