Trying to Get Pregnant

Sharp cramps that never really go away?

Since going off BCP, I often (almost every day, although not all of the time) experience sharp, sometimes shooting, cramps in my lower right abdomen, right near my right ovary.  They can best be described as pinching and burning, and do not have the low, "dark" feeling of AF cramps.  I have explained them away as ovulation pain, implantation cramps, and AF cramps, but they are happening at every point in my cycle, so I don't think any of that wishful thinking is going to work any more.  Does anyone else experience this?  If so, have you ever discussed it with your doctor?  I have an appointment next month to see my Ob/Gyn and had planned to ask then, but as they seem to be getting more prevalent, I am thinking I may need to push up that discussion.

  • If you call back and explain to them the pain maybe they can get you in sooner. If its gets to where you can take it any more maybe you should go to the ER.

  • I have been having mild to moderate cramps throughout my entire cycle for the past few cycles.  With each new cycle, they get a little worse.  I have had some random shooting pains on either side, but nothing that is constant there.

I have my annual next week.  I do plan on speaking to my doctor about this.

I am not much help on the advice part, but just wanted to let you know that I am experiencing similar pains.

  • Same here.  Stabbing pains on the left side near my ovary, similar to ovulation pain, although one night the pain was so sharp it woke me up.  I've been off BCPs since the beginning of July, so I brushed it aside as a side effect of my body regulating...but I decided the next time I get these pains I was going to email my doc and see if I should go in to see her.  If you guys talk to a doc and hear about what could be causing this issue, please share - I'm very curious to see what the answer is.

  •  Powers---- I have a pain on the left as well. The dr told me that it could be endo. She said to give it another 6 months TTC. If we still haven't then we will talk about doing the surgery. Since we are only at 3 months TTC she doesnt reccomend doing it right now.  Good Luck to all of you!

Wow.  OK.  I am pretty much in the same boat as you - 3rd month TTC.  I noticed this pain issue after I had already had my yearly gyno appointment, so I didn't ask the doc about it.  I did ask to be screened for PCOS since I have some of the risk factors - so if we don't conceive soon, hopefully maybe having the U/S and 3rd cycle day bloodwork can also show if endo is a factor.  I honestly don't know anything about it, but now I'm going to do some research and keep an eye out for if I have any more symptoms.  Thanks for the info and good luck to you!

She seemed pretty calm about it so I am trying to be too.  She said it can happen from coming off BC. I stopped in July and the pain started a month later.

Okay, you just confirmed my worst fear.  Even though I do not have any of the other symptoms of endo, I am getting myself to the doctor.

Unfortunately the only way to officially confirm endo is with a laperoscopy. Sometimes it can show up on an ultrasound but that's definitely the exception and not the norm. All of my initial diagnostics always came back clear (HSG, ultrasound, etc.). Endo will not be able to be detected through bloodwork.

The good news though is that even if it is endo, it doesn't automatically mean fertility issues. Only 40% of women with endo see an effect in their fertility.

OP, definitely keep an eye on the pains you're having and don't hesitate to let your doctor know if they progessively get worse. FWIW - even after I had my lap and had the endo removed, I still get pains and twinges in my ovaries starting at about CD5-6 and sometimes they last until AF shows up. It could just be little cysts (which aren't uncommon, especially if you're in your 30s) or it could just be nothing. GL!
