Pregnant after IF

Did you take a break?

I am 40 and just completed my second IVF cycle. IF I do not get a positive next week I think I might take a month off. I originally planned to do them all back to back but have a family issue that caused a great deal of stress last month. I do not want to put it off too long because I am 40 and realize that I do not have much time left. Also I might want to get a second opinion on my protocol (it might put me more at ease). Our insurance covers 3 fresh cycles and 3 frozen(if I can achieve that level). After that we are on our own. Anyone take a break ?

Re: Did you take a break?

  • My RE required a cycle break between each failed cycle. Good luck!

  • After my failed IVF, he was ok with us moving forward with a frozen transfer the following month but when that also failed (both were c/p) he had me take a month off before I went back to IUI.   Good luck, hang in there. I know its tough.

    IUI#1 - 05/20/08 = BFP! M/C - 14 weeks :( baby girl
    IUI#2 - 01/07/09 = BFP!!! Twins!! Pre-term labor 20 weeks :( lost twin girls
    IUI#3 - 1/31/10 = BFP!!!! M/C - 8wks :( again
    IVF #1 - 7/2010 = c/p
    FET - 9/2010 = another c/p
    IUI#4 - 2/14/11 = BFP!

  • I did mostly one month for ourselves and to let my body rest. I did however took a six month break between my last injectible iui and my first IVF. Because I switched clinics.
Personally I don't think a month or two of wait will affect you in a negative way. Plus all I heard from my nurse coordinator was that I needed to be ready for hiccups, complications and such. So I cleaned my schedule as much as I could.
    Good luck!

  • We took a 6 month break b/w our first failed FET and IVF#2.  We had been cycling for a year and half straight and were just emotionally and physically exhausted.  We spent time researching clinics, getting second opinons, and having fun.  Our next cycle wasn't successful, but I still don't regret the break.  FWIW, I was over 35, so I can relate about the AMA fears, but still think it was the best thing for us.

  • My RE recommended a month break. We actually took about three before our successful cycle because we wanted to enjoy the holidays and give my eggs some extra boost with vitamins. Good luck.

  • When I had my miscarriage from my first IVF cycle - I took over a year off because it was just too hard for me and I had to regroup before I could cycle again - but I did have time on my side - I was only 28 at the time.  I think you need to do what is right for you.
