This is completely my opinion and I understand if you don';t agree but I can't stand when people put their newborn in a carseat without the base. I just feel like the base is so much more safe. I feel like the carseat can move too much with just the seatbelt around it. It seriously pisses me off! Ok I'm done!
Re: vent...
i agree with you.
That is totally irresponsible. In Ontario, i'm pretty sure its illegal to do this...
I agree that it feels safer, but as long as you lock off the seat belt (pull it all the way out and then when it retracts get it as tight as possible) it really can be a safe install.
We had to do it a few times. H's old car (1999 infiniti) didn't have LATCH. We got a tighter install with just the seat than we did with the base using the seat belt.

I agree. I also want to share a situation about a young inexperienced girl (SIL). She was in an accident a couple weeks ago and had her 5 month old baby in the back. The impact was bad enough that it crushed one side of the vehicle, and everyone was taken to the er for precautions and to check out the baby. After being told to dispose of the carseat (that was given to her, God forbid her buy anything for her own child) to this day she still uses it. I told her yesterday to trash it and buy another one because its not safe now and she refuses.
Also, her wrecked car is in the shop and she left the base in it. So shes using just the carrier part without the base, and put the baby in the back seat of a rental car they are using. She, once again had to slam on the brakes for some reason (last week) and the baby (in the carseat) flew to the front of the vehicle between the 2 front seats! I was pissed when I heard MIL tell us this....and of course they think it was just an accident and *** happens....laugh it off kinda deal! Umm NO! How many times does that baby have to be thrown around a vehicle due to irresponsibility???
Ugh, my kids will never (have never thank God!) go with my ILs! Ever.

You may "feel" like it's not as safe, but you would be wrong and there is no evidence supporting your argument. The latch system and the base are there for convenience sake not for safety.
I am in a family of trama surgeons and engineers (including my husband and myself). We have all studied the literature and if you install the car seat correctly (EVERY TIME), the base does not make for a safer installation.
When I travel (and I do frequently) I leave the base at home. I install the car seat per the manufacturer's recommendations in a car with the appropriate restraint system. It takes some muscle and if you are not strong enough to do this on your own I can see how you would be concerned, but there is NO valid evidence to suggest that one way is more correct or safe than the other if they are both installed correctly. They would not be able to sell it or provide installation instructions for both if one were more were more safe or if one did not meet safety standards.
It is more difficult and time consuming without the base, but it is no less safe.
She obviously didn't install it correctly. This also happens if you have a base and you don't connect the car seat to the base correctly.
*claps*
You said it a lot better than I did.

Really??
I can't see someone really doing that...
i mean isn't all the safety stuff in the base anyways?
No, not all car seats need a base to be safely installed. If your car seat instructions tell you that it can not be installed without the base then yes, you need the base. Most are capable of, and have instructions for, safely installing the seat without the base. Those seats meet or exceed all federal safety standards either way if installed correctly.
Well said. There is a REASON that they have manufacturer instructions on how to install without the base.
We have multiple bases for convenience, not safety.
