Why I Will NOT Be Registering at Target: A Cautionary Tale

Last week, we order a crib from Target online--it was a great deal and came with a free mattress. Then they shipped us the wrong crib.

OK, mistakes happen, but the process of trying to call and have them correct THEIR mistake was beyond irritating. I couldn't even get through to customer service, which of course set every pregnancy hormone in my body aflame, and my husband generously tried calling only to be put on hold multiple times by an incompetent customer service rep, making our total call to them OVER AN HOUR LONG. We've never had such a bad experience trying to have a shipping mistake corrected. What an irritating loss of our time and our energy.

Just thought I'd warn you all. We are definitely NOT registering at Target after this experience. It's clear they don't value their customers' time, energy, or emotions--only their money. I know some of you out there have your own Target horror stories--share away!!!!

  • This could happen anywhere :)
And while I've heard horror stories from Target Registries I've heard them from everywhere.  Unfortunately you can get bad service from anywhere.

Luckily, myself, I had no problem with my registry at Target with DD and our wedding.  But I know that's not the case for everyone.

  • We had a TON of problems with Target when we registered with DS, returns were a nightmare and the customer service was downright awful. However we registered their for our wedding and had no problems whatsoever (policies changed and so did the people, thank God!)....I agree with PP that mistakes and poor customer service can happen anywhere! It does suck that you're having to deal with it right now! Hope they get it figured out for you!

  • I have to agree that I've heard horror story after horror story about targets registries and returns. We had to return so much stuff after our wedding showers because of duplicates and bed bath and beyond was AMAZING!! They even took back stuff people got us from Target that Target wouldn't let us return because there was no receipt. Not sure why they can't get their act together on that. I know they have one of the strongest loss prevention teams in the industry but I think sometimes that inhibits retailers from making decisions that promote customer loyalty (ie easy return policies)

  • I never had any issues with Target for our wedding registry -- as long as it was on my registry (which I always had printed out & handy) they gave us store credit without a problem. Regular returns I had no problems either -- but I think that the idea that this can happen anywhere is so true!

BB&Beyond is beyond amazing with returns -- I"ve taken things back broken without a receipt & they give me a new one -- i dont know how stores like that stay in business!! But thank you ;)

Are you going to write a letter? You should- they usually suck up to the big complainers!!

  • This is so funny!  I JUST got back from our local Target and it was soooo dysfunctional.  I deleted the 4 items I scanned as soon as I got home.  I even had a difficult time STARTING the registry on their computers.  This is so strange, too, because we had a great time registering for our wedding there in 2009.  What the hell happened?!

Do you have a Buy Buy Baby nearby?  Their stores are sooo much more convenient and nicer inside, too.  They offer a personal shopper to walk you through the store during the registration process.  They sell beautiful cribs there, too.  They're more expensive than Target, but you can use a 20% off coupon on each item of furniture or else they will price match any other store.  Also, most of them convert into full sized beds.

  • Target is the WORST!!!! I have not heard one single nice registry story about them. They are all bad!

  • Yes, I've heard their customer service is awful (and return policy is even worse!) but I did see it as a necessary evil to put a small registry up there, but ONLY for items I knew I'd never need to return.  I really wanted 1 practical well-priced discount store to register with, since BabiesRUs runs so high.  Target lures people in with their nice selection and good prices, and doesn't seem to care about service.  I guess their motto is that you get what you pay for.  I'm so sorry you had to go through all that & I hope you get it straightened out soon.
  • That stinks that you had an awful experience!! I have never had a problem with target with our wedding registry or so far with our baby registry. Good luck getting the correct crib!
    Anxiously awaiting baby # 3! Due May 14, 2017!

  • I agree, I was not impressed with the wedding registry.  Things got discontinued or out of stock.  I won't be going back for the baby registry.

  • I have both a Target and Babies R' Us registry. I have the Target one mostly because it is right by my work and will be convenient for people for my work shower. I tried to put most of the things I really wanted, however, on my Babies R' US Registry. I went into the store to start both, and both were pleasant, although Target's computers to sign up were dysfunctional. But updating online, I can barely stand to go to Target.com because it's been such a PITA. They finally have it running again, but it takes it an extremely long time to load and there's been trouble with a couple of the items. My Babies R' Us registry has been great. I cannot decide whether or not to keep the Target registry.
