Used baby shower gift?

My sorority had a shower for me at the meeting last night.  (non academic sorority we raise money for cancer research)

One women who is a little...odd... gave me an outfit for a girl that I can only guess came from a garage sale.  Its a white long sleve shirt with a scottie dog on the collar and a red and black jumper and pleather booties.  The collar has light orange stains all over it.  I'm just going to wash it and donate it.  She dresses very nice...so this kind of threw me for a loop.  Not that I don't mind something that is used...but atleast make sure it is clean!

In better news I got two very cute silver picture frames,  a bunch of diapers and cute "boy" outfits!

  • That's really strange. I'm glad you got some neat stuff!

  • lol that is strange.  I would've asked her (under the guise of - thank you for the gift it was so nice!)  where she got it from.  Maybe it was her daughters?  And she thought she was doing a nice gesture by giving it to you?  Or - what if!  It is actually some sort of antique and worth a lot of money.  I would look into it before throwing it away.... you never know it could be treasure (or it could be trash).
We received an odd old serving dish as a gift once and thought it was trash - it turned out to be an antique...

Hmm, I have never heard of vintage baby clothes, but I would think if a gift was of significant value ( monetary or sentimental) the gift giver would make a point to tell you this.

  • That story would be strange if the outfit were new.  I don't know what to tell you.
  • I've bought over 90% of my baby clothes from used children's stores. I just don't see the value in spending $20 for a sleeper that will be too small in 2 months.

  • I think that's really odd. I mean it is one thing to buy used items for yourself or just to give hand-me-downs to someone but I think gifts should definitely be new.

It's one thing to buy used yourself...or, if you get used items after the fact from grandparents or friends. But for a shower gift? That's really tacky. That's like giving someone used lingerie at a bachelorette party...or used dinnerware at a wedding shower. If you can't afford a gift, just go to be there and support the person...or politely decline.
