My power was out from 3:30pm to 1:00am. I opened the fridge twice and the freezer once. I just bought milk and hamburger yesterday to make today. Do you think it is still good? It would smell if it was bad right?
It should still be fine. If you didn't open the door very much, the cold air would have stayed inside. I would smell both and if they smell okay, go for it!

I didn't open the fridge after the power came on. I was so hot and tired I just wanted to go to bed. I opened the freezer to put the ice cream back. It was still cold.
Ours was out for 13 hours. Here is what the FDA said in their report this morning.
Even if your fridge wasn't opened during the black out the food inside would stay at the correct temperature for 4 hours. After that (which applies to all of San Diego) any dairy, lunch meat needs to be tossed out. Salad dressings, jelly..things like that are all fine. As far as the Freezer goes, if your freezer is 1/2 full and was not opened the food inside is good for 24 hours. If your freezer is full and was unopened the food inside is good for 48 hours.
Now of course everyone has their own opinions of what is safe and what is not, but I will not be eating any dairy/meat from our fridge, DH tossed it all out today. We both Managed restaurants for too many years knowing all the correct temps foods need to stay at so we are extra cautious. I also have had food poisioning twice, and it was so awful I thought I would die!!
Hope that helps!

Thanks. I was leaning towards tossing it. I had food poisoning once and wanted to die. I hate that I just bought the food yesterday and now have to toss it. Plus, I don't have anything for dinner now.
We tossed meat, cheese, milk, salad dressing, etc. I took pics of the fridge and the food that we are tossing. If you have renters/homeowners insurance through USAA, you can file a claim:
"Many of our residential property policies provide some limited coverage for food spoilage in the event that your refrigerated products are destroyed due to a widespread power outage. This coverage would apply even if you have no other damage to your home or apartment. If you have a loss to your refrigerated products you can report a claim online or call us at 1-800-531-USAA (8722)."
