How much time did you have to take off...

while pregnant? I'm trying to figure out how much wiggle room I have with my leave between now and May. Since I just started in December, I don't have a ton of time saved up for maternity leave. I don't want to have use my STD due to it only paying 2/3 of regular salary. So basically, I'm just curious how much any of you working mamas had to take off while pregnant. I know appointments will get more and more frequent, but I'm not too concerned about those because those will be easy to flex my time around (I routinely work 9-10 hour days, and my boss lets us flex that time out during the rest of the week).

Am I going to be sick more often? (I already have my first cold, yay!) Could m/s get so bad I have to take time off here and there? Etc.Obviously I know every person's answer will be different, just trying to get an idea.

  • No way to know on the m/s. It's possible. There were plenty of times I would have called in but stuck it out because I wanted to save my PTO for maternity leave. I've puked in a lot of places I'm not proud of.

    I didn't have to take any time off while PG except when I got swine flu. I still would have gone to work but you know... being contagious in the ER, not cool!!!

  • This time around, I didn't take off any time at all while pregnant (at least, not because of the pregnancy). Last time I took off my last four Mondays so that I had longer weekend and shorter work weeks, but that was purely a luxury, not a necessity.

  • i didn't take any time off. i had bad m/s also but stuck it out cause i wanted to save the time for when LO arrived.

    when i had dr's appointments... i just worked late that night to make up the hours. 

  • I really try to not take any time off while pregnant.  Even when I was super sick with m/s in the beginning I dragged my butt to work.  I admit there were days where I took naps in my car during my lunch break.  Embarrassed  For Dr appts, I usually just end up staying late to make up any time I miss past my lunch hour.  That seems to work. 

    Last time I worked up until about 2 days before my due date, and I'll do the same this time; as well.

    Pretty much this. I would come in late or leave early sometimes, but I really didn't "have" to take any time, I just didn't feel much like working. But then again, I did not have very bad m/s. I did puke at work serveral times, but, eh, no big deal.

  • I was working when I got pregnant with and delivered DS.  I took off a full 12 weeks as allowed by my company through FMLA.  Because my company did not offer paid family-medical leave, I had to use a combination of personal paid leave (our vacation time and sick time were rolled into one) and short-term disability.

    How a company administers paid/non-paid leave and FMLA is different for each.

    At my company, STD didn't kick in until two calendar weeks after the qualifying event. For the first two calendar weeks which included 6 working days (two days were weekend days and two days were paid holidays), I had to use my PPL for payment on those days.  Then I was paid 66.34% of my pay from STD and the remaining 33.66% was covered by PPL.  I had enough time saved up to be fully paid for the entire time I took off.

    I did not have any complications (excessive m/s that made it impossible to work or bedrest, etc.) so I didn't have to go on leave until after the baby was born.  At my company, maternity leave started once the baby was born, if no other qualifying events happened before then. 

    I was able to work remotely a lot so that was a plus during my pregnancy.

  • I have not missed one day of work since I've been pregnant.  I want to save it all for when LO is born.  It also helps that I really didn't have any m/s.  I never (knock on wood) threw up once. 

    I am due 1/3/12.  I plan to take off 12/22/11-2/15/11.  At that point I will return at 20 hours per week.  Beginning 4/1/11 I will work 30-35 hours per week.  Just so you know, I never work a full 40 hours per week so come 4/1/11 I'll be back to my normal.

    Yeah, I'll be able to make up my time for appts. The days I'm in court in Austin, I'm usually there 7:30-5 or later with no lunch break, so I just apply that time to other days for doctor's appointments. If I don't have any late days in court, I can just stay late one day.

    It's reassuring to hear most of you didn't need to take time off. I've already had to take a half day due to this stupid cold and may leave early today, as well. It's kicking my butt!  I was beginning to get worried this might be what I have in store for me for the next several months. I don't usually get sick, so hopefully this cold is just a random, unavoidable anomaly. (Apparently it's been going around the office, but I didn't know since I'm hardly ever in the office.)

  • None, except for a planned vacation.  There were days where I felt terrible, but I figured I could sit at my desk and answer emails.  My m/s lasted for 16 weeks and I never actually puked but I was nauseous all day long.  Not fun but I toughed it out!

  • I also didn't have to take many days off.  I tried to schedule late in the day so if I did, it was 1/2 day or if possible someone would cover my last class of the day.

    This year, I am not so lucky.  I will have to take 1/2 days for my appts every time.  Kind of sucks b/c like AJL, my district doesn't offer paid leave, so I use up what sick/personal days I have left, then I have to get std.  I think I get about 3/4 of my take home through them.  That's what it seemed like last time.

  • I also didnt take any leave before Sparky arrived. I worked from a hospital bed the last week, though.

  • the only time i took off was 3 days of sick time (really bad cold), but that comes out of a separate bank of time, and a planned vacation. i also didn't have really bad m/s and have options to work from home.

    I had to quit my job by the end of my 1st tri.. I had HG and was hospitalized no less than 6 times the first trimester due to dehydration from M/S. I wasn't a functioning human until sometime around late 20 weeks - 30 weeks PG. 

    :sigh: Such fond memories of being PG.

    I'm sorry to hear that you had such a miserable time being pregnant.  It's not fair how some people see to carry so well and some people are sick all the time.

    Oh yeah, I forgot.  I did take some time to go to Belize for a belated honeymoon.  No pregnancy sick-related time, though.
