Pricing for consignment sale?

We have a pretty big local consignment sale coming up next week and I'm thinking about consigning a few of E's things that I don't plan on keeping for little brother. I've never consigned anything before and have no idea about pricing his things? Everything is name brand, great condition...what's the rule of thumb to go by?

The sale I participate in recommends 75% off full retail on most items. I knock less off for smocked clothing or anything I think will be in high demand. If you price them too high (and I think 15-25% off is too high) they won't sell.

At my favorite local consignment sale (Just Between Friends), things are priced higher than a garage sale, but not out of control (you can tell who the newbies are to the sale because their items are priced WAY too high).

For the 2T and under crowd, I can usually get a pair of PJ's for $1-$1.50 each (usually they're grouped in sets), A name brand outfit for somewhere between $3 and $6 (depending on how many pieces are included), Hats for $1, T-shirts/onesies/pants for $0.50-$1.50 (again, these are usually grouped in sets). The last day is 50% off day so sometimes I get things for half of these prices.

For sizes over 2T, the prices usually go up a little.

Still, I have never paid more than $8 for one outfit at consignment. . . and that was name-brand-new-with-tags.

I agree with PPs & also think that if I was buying it, would I want to spend that much for an item. When I consign I price to sell especially with clothes. I would rather get rid of it & make a couple of bucks rather than be stuck with it when it doesn't sell.

It really depends on your area - I also consign and buy things with Just Between Friends sale, which is twice a year in my area. I price things at what I would pay for them and keep in mind that on the last day of the sale my things will be marked to sell at 1/2 price... Most of DS's things are either Gap, Gymboree or Old Navy, with a few Janie & Jack, Ralph Lauren, Benetton and Hanna Andersron as well. For the sale that is taking place in 2 weeks, I have winter type clothing for sale, jeans/long sleeve onesies, sweaters etc.. most items are anywhere between $2,50 - $5.00 an item, depending on the brand. Around here people do look for and pay more for brands. For example, if I have a pair of Carter's jeans I would sell them for $2, where as if they were Gap I would sell them for $4. There are also a lot of sets, 2 pants or 2 onesies or a onesie w/mathing pants and sets go for $5-6. Shoes tend to go for $3-$5 a pair, depending on type, brand and condition. I have had great success with consigning DS's things. It's time consuming if you have a lot to sell. I also volunteer at the sale on 2 days and distribute flyers around town so that I can get a better percentage back on my sales. Normally you get 60% of the sale price, I get 70% because I volunteer and do the advertising. Good luck!

I am a facilitator for a seasonal sale in my area, and we always tell people 1/4-1/3 of the original retail price. Things also sell better as sets. Always. I try to group gowns, onesies, socks, etc together.
