Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

12 months and not walking!!

I've been around for awhile but usually don't post much... My question is how did you get your baby to walk? My son turned 1 on 8/30 and still isn't walking. I'm not sure if it is because he's my last baby and he knows it so he's going to take his good ol time or what. I have 3 other kids 2 of which walked at 10 mths and 1 walked at 9 months. He takes steps from time to time but when we try to practice walking with him he just drops down on his butt. I would like some suggestions to try because it is driving me crazy...... Thanks Ladies in advance :)

Re: 12 months and not walking!!

  • 12 months is the "average" age for walking. Its still perfectly normal for kids not to walk up until 18 months.

  • Most kids I know didn't walk until 14-15months so you have no reason to be worried at this point.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Some children are just late walkers. DD turned 1 last October and didn't start really walking until almost March of this year.

  • 12 months is not the time to start panicking about not walking.  It is not that uncommon.  DD did not start walking on her own until 14 months.  She spent the longest time pushing around her push toys, but would not walk without them even though she was barely using the toys to stay up.  I think she just wanted to perfect walking before she did it on her own because once she started walking on her own she had no problems and was running a few months later.  Every child is different and your DS will do it on his own time.

  • My son took his first steps at 14.5 months and was not a full time walker until 16 months.

  • Thanks Ladies..... I guess I was just expecting it to be earlier since my other 3 walked so early!!
  • My LO did not walk until he was 16 months.  You have planty of time to wait to start to get nervous.
  • Twelve months is still early to be walking. My pedi said that it's a skill generally expected to come between 12-18 months -- so 15 months is the average.

My DD1 walked at 14.5 months, DD2 at 13 months.

  • Not being mean but I seriously just laughted a little when I saw your title since DD just took her first independant steps last week :).  She's just over 16 months.  She's been cruising the furniture since about 12-13 months and just stood on her own for the first time maybe 2-3 weeks ago.  Dont worry your LO has plenty of time.

  • It's perfectly normal for a 12 mo to NOT walk yet.  Don't rush it!  My DD walked at 13 months on her own.  We didn't do anything special as I wanted her to do it at her own pace and give her body time to develop enough physically to do it.  Let him be!  He'll walk when he's ready.

  • Olivia was 12 months when she started walking, Natalie was 15 months, and Dominic just took 4 steps yesterday at 13.5 months.

It's not a big deal that he's not walking.   I wouldn't force it.

  • To add to the pps i bet he gets things brought to him all the time since he has siblings.  It is really common for younger siblings to walk later since they have no need to walk.  DS1 walked at 10 months and DS2 walked at 15.5 months.  As you know all kids are different.  Mine are complete opposites.

  • DD didn't start walking until just after she turned 15 months.  Don't worry its completely normal to not walk up until they're 18 months old.

  • 12 months is avg to early.

DD has been crawling for close to 5 months and not even close to walking yet.  Just give him the walking toys, and help the cruising.  It will come.

  • Dude, you are REALLY pregnant.

FWIW, my LO didn't start until 17 months.

If you have older kids, your LO probably doesn't have big motivation to walk b/c they bring him everything he needs.

  • DS#2 was 15 months when he started walking and he is still a little wobbley.  DS#1 was 13 months and took off like lightning one day.  I wouldn't worry, it will happen all of a sudden out of nowhere and you will be shocked!

  • My dd didn't start walking on her own until 15.5 months.

No need to be worried, its normal and common to not be walking at a year.

  • My DD is just under 13 months and no walking here.  Lots of cruising but no walking, I am not concerned.  If we get to 2 yrs old and no walking then I will be concerned.
  • I think you can walk with them, holding hands and wait for them to figure it out, etc.  It just happened one day!

  • Also, not that I would want him to be behind developmentally, but I wouldn't be so eager for him to walk.  Once he walks, you'll never sit! :)

  • I didn't walk til I was 16 months. My mom still swears it is because my older brother and one of her daycare kids brought me everything I wanted so I just didn't see a point in it.

My DD didn't walk til the day she turned 17 months. Now I am chasing her around just like any other mom of a toddler :) I am sure your DS will get around to it when he is good and ready. Til then don't worry.

  • Perfectly normal until 18 mos,

  • You've got to chill.  He'll walk when he's ready.

See my ticker?  DD just started taking more than 2 steps at a time, a few days ago. She still doesn't walk all the time.

I'm not the least bit worried.

  • My son didn't start walking till 14 months. It took him awhile to get going from there on a regular basis... I would always worry and get annoyed when I saw babies much younger than him trucking along! But now I realize they all do it at thier own pace and it doesn't mean anything! No need to worry!

  • My daughter was crawling at her first birthday.  She didn't pull up to stand until she turned 14 months and walking on her own didn't happen until 18.  She now runs all over and gets into everything.
  • I thought my DD was going to walk early also because my DS walked at 10 months and up until walking, she hit all of her milestones really early, much earlier than him.  But, I was wrong, she didn't walk until a few days before she turned 14 months old. She progressed very quickly though...she went from taking a few wobbly steps to full blown walking like a pro in a week.
  • Mine showed no interest in walking until she was 14 months. Now (at 15.5 months) she's all over the place...
  • My DD is almost 14 months old and she just started pulling up a month ago.  If I had to take a guess she won't be walking until around 18 months.

  • I wouldn't worry.  Pedi told us that he would be concerned if DD didn't start walking after 17 or 18 months.  She was a slow starter and finally began walking when she was around 16 months old.
  • Thanks Ladies...... I guess my reasoning was because my other 3 all walked by 10 months!
