TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Tell me about your 1st RE appointment

I am headed to my very first RE appointment on Tuesday.  I have no idea what to expect, will he want me to drop trou?  I am bringing along my charts, my most recent pap results, and (if I can find it) my blood work from Feb when they tested me for PCOS.  Any suggestions or stories will be greatly appreciated!  Tell me they wont burn me at the stake for being a fatty!

Re: Tell me about your 1st RE appointment

  • First, I'm so happy for you, taking this step.  I know it's huge and scary and I applaud you for taking it.

My first RE apt was very refreshing.  We sat in an office (not an exam room) and I just jabbered on about everything that I knew about my cycles, my health, our m/cs, test results, etc.  The RE (Dr. Huxtable b/c he acts just like him) sat and listened and wrote notes and asked questions that filled in gaps.  He was the first person I'd talked to who just listened to the facts and didn't hide from them at all.  I know that's his job, but it was so awesome.

Then he talked about what he thought was likely going on, and the steps we'd take to make his guess more accurate.  He answered more questions and gave us stats about what test results usually uncover.  We talked about possible meds/remedies, timing and several different courses of action, complete with tons of "What-ifs" from yours truly.  I was still m/cing #3 at that visit, so I was highly emotional, bitter and skeptical and despite all that, I left feeling better.

This practice is apparently not very much into charts, which is a bit of a bummer.  I'd choose differently if I had to do it again, but I did have them with me when I went, just in case.

Also, I talked about how I'd subsisted almost wholly on Oreos for the week prior to our visit and he didn't even bat an eye, even though I'm also pretty overweight.  I will seriously fly my fat a$$ to Washington and punch anyone in the face who suggests anything remotely close to burning you at the stake.  If you even get a whiff of it, leave immediately and go somewhere else.  The ladies of the TTCAL6+ will take over from there.

Seriously, hon.  This is going to be good.  I know what it's like to be at a standstill, not ready to move in any direction.  It's painful no matter what.  But I sincerely hope and believe that taking this step will bring you peace and relief.  ((((HUGE HUGS))))

  • My experience was pretty similar to EclairAngst's.  We met in his office and he looked over my intake paperwork and asked questions/made notes about things I had written.  He looked over my charts and previous labwork with me.  Then we discussed what he thought our possible issues were and he discussed the testing he would order.  Then, he talked about possible plans he would take depending on the outcome of the testing.  The meeting lasted about an hour, and I left feeling really comfortable.  I hope you have the same experience.

Oh, and she never even mentioned me being a fatty! No one in the office has ever mentioned that.

  • When i went we talked for a while an she got my medical history and went over possible options, which we would talk more about after all the tests she recommended . I happened to be on cd4 so we went ahead and did an ultrasound to check out my ovaries and ute and did bloodwork. It was great to talk to someone whose goal is to get people pregnant.

  • My suggestion would be to come up with an issues or questions you want to discuss and don't be afraid to ask! It's easy just to listen to the dr, but you'll get more out of it if there is a dialogue

  • Our first RE appointment left us with a lot of hope and excitement.  I hope it's the same for you!  We met the RE, discussed our family history and our TTC history.  He requested extra testing based on what we told him (my lap and HSG) and designed three potential courses of action depending on our motivation, the cost, and results of testing.

I can't wait to hear about your appointment!  I wrote down a list of about 5 questions to ask at our first appointment.  I found that having questions already written helped me organize and get out of the meeting everything I could.

  • First off, you'll be keeping your pants on! Probably for the last time, but at least you'll leave them on for Tuesday. No leg shaving required.

Secondly, you won't be burned at the stake for your weight. It probably won't even come up. Mine never did, and you've SEEN me hoover down a sandwich.

You'll sit in his office, go over your tests, probably watch a Powerpoint presentation or two and have a good question/answer period. Then he'll tell you what the next steps are in regards to testing and you'll go to the front and set all that stuff up.

THEN you'll have to start taking off your pants.

  • Mine was just a consult, but I want to say he went ahead and ran some bloodwork that day.  I only had to drop my pants for u/s and my SHG.

ETA:  We may not have run bloodwork.  I remember them giving me a calendar to fill in my cycle days and they had certain tests to run on certain days.  Also, I'm chunky and they never said anything.  I thought for sure an acupuncturist who's also a MD I went to would tell me to lose weight, but she just said it was better to be a little over than a little under when it came to fertility.

  • I had to come with a bunch of paperwork already filled out.  DH and I met with the RE and answered a lot of questions - TTC related, health related, family healthy history.  DH had already had a SA somewhere else and I gave those results to her.  I did have an internal exam (boo!).

She told us what she thought we might want to try (clomid was mentioned) and she explained the tests they would want to run first.  At the end of the appt I was told to call on day 1 of my cycle to set up my b/w and SHG.

I was nervous, but it was a really good appt (well, I could have done without the exam).  I am overweight and nothing was said to me.  I hope that you have a great appt on Tuesday!!
