What to feed 1 year old for breakfast?

We're on our last bowl of rice cereal, which we have kept DD on for breakfast because at her 9 month appointment she was borderline anemic and the pedi suggested that we keep with it for the iron.  At her 1 year appt she was fine and the pedi said we can keep with it or not, it's up to us. She has fully transitioned to cow's milk so there's no formula in her diet for an iron source.

She feeds herself lunch and dinner so I would like to start the same with breakfast but I'm worried about her not getting enough iron in her diet. We offer beef a couple tiems a week and sometimes she takes it but many times she won't.

Other sources of iron that have been a hit with your little ones?

Breakfast ideas in general for little fingers and little mouths? :-)

Thanks!

  • we had some iron issues around the same age so i'd try to sneak spinach into things... for breakfast that meant a spinach omelet.  my ds LOVE eggs.

    another tip my doctor gave me was to not give milk with iron rich foods because the milk and the iron compete or something like that... the body doesnt absorb as much iron when mixed with milk.  on the other hand, vitamin c help iron absorption, so mixing iron rich foods with vitamin c foods is helpful.

    here is an article that lists some good foods and talks about the vitamin c thing:

    We also did the Poly Vi Sol + iron vitamins until his iron levels were normal.  Has your doctor recommended a supplement like that?

  • oh, as for self feeding breakfast foods...

    pancakes

    french toast sticks

    boiled or scrambled eggs (made more like an omelet so i can cut into chunks)

    fruit

    dry cereal

    oatmeal (made thick, congeals when it cools so you can cut into chunks or sort of roll into balls)

  • Believe it or not, Cheerios are a great source of nutrients, including iron. My kids started eating full fat yogurt with cheerios sprinkled on top around that age and still eat it now at 4.5 and 2.

    scrambled eggs, usually with cheese on top

    bagels with cream cheese, cut in to pieces for a 1 yo

    yogurt

    oatmeal

    pancakes or french toast

    banana bread

    Also, remember, breakfast is a just a meal. It's an important meal but who dictates what are breakfast foods vs not? If you have something that your kiddo will eat that gives them a solid start on their day, it doesn't need to be labelled "breakfast food."

  • My not-so-interested-in-food little one goes through phases. Sometimes he only has a sippy cup of milk and a few bites of toast, sometimes he eats blueberry pancakes.

    Here are the things we have had the most success with:

    * Blueberry pancakes (I make them on the weekend and freeze them)

    * Toast with cream cheese

    * Toddler cereal bars (whole grains with real fruit)

    * Yogurt (he is pretty good with a spoon if we put the food on the spoon for him)

    * Cheerios

    * Fruit

    * Banana bread muffins

    * Mish mash or similar puree or smoothie that he drinks from a pouch

    He still dislikes eggs, but we keep trying.

  • This morning, she signed and said "Theezth" (cheese) before I even picked her up of bed so she got a cheese stick and blueberries today.

    Scrambled eggs (sometimes with veggies included) + fruit have been a hit since we very first introduced them to her.

    Fried egg with a mostly-cooked yolk on half a wheat english muffin (now that she's older)

    Greek yogurt + fruit

    Banana-zucchini bread w/pb

    PB toast + banana slices

    We don't eat much cereal but now she's all over a small bowl of the Central Market peanut butter puffs if we have it. It's a complete mess to give her cereal with milk but she's getting better with the spoon.

  • I am a cereal addict, so that's what my kids wanted first. So regular oatmeal with raisins (I cut the raisins up when they were small), cinnamon life, shredded wheat, and, around 18mo, raisin bran. I tried to feed my kids cheerios since that's what kids eat, right? But since I don't like them and don't eat them, they didn't care about them either.

    Any type muffin, pancakes and waffles (we cook a lot of them and freeze, we use a sweet recipe so no syrup is required), toast cut into toast soldiers, fruit.

    One morning DD wanted broccoli for breakfast... ok, kinda weird, but I made some for her.

  • Oatmeal, yogurt, breakfast bars (nutrigrain bar), dry cheerios, eggo-type organic waffles, fruit, etc.
  • Thanks so much, everyone!  I really appreciate these great ideas.  We'll be trying some new things this weekend.
