Talk to me about the 4 month wakeful.

How long does it usually last? What causes it? What exactly does it involve?

Noah has started waking up every 2 hours again at night, wanting a little snack, then passing back out.

  • That is exactly how Em is.

I have read this is when they develop into a human that is aware of their surroundings. During the day, Em is completely distracted. With the dog running around, her looking at me, DH talking, loud noises, the TV, etc she is learning about our world. She doesn't want to be completely full, so at night when she wakes up every two hours, it is to eat a small snack and go back to bed. This was off of Kellymom.com for BF babies, so I am not sure if it is the same for FF. I am not sure which you do.

It lasted for me only about 2 weeks luckily.  She still has her nights and wakes up every two hours again. Also, this is the best time to start a sleep method, whether you choose CIO or any of the others.

Another thing I remember reading, and the pedi confirmed, this is also the developmental stage where they go from the "sleep through anything" newborn stage, to the "more aware" adult sleep. At night, adults take about 30 minutes to fall into a deep sleep. When we come out of that deep sleep, they go into a lighter sleep. Some babies can't figure out why all of a sudden they can wake up easier so they wake up completely. Hopefully this makes sense.

Good Luck! She tested my limits with it. Luckily she is back to STTN!!

Ugh, this has been my life for the last few nights. Last night was 10:30, 1:00, 3:00, 5:00 (and that time it took him 30 - 45 mins to fall back asleep) and then up for the day at 7:00. I'm exhausted.

  • Yup, same story with DD which is crazy for us because DS never went through a phase like this- kid slept 12 hours through the night from about 8 weeks old on!  We didn't know how good we had it!

DD has been going down between 7:30-8:30 then waking between 12-1, 2-3, and 5-6, up for the day around 7-7:30 for 2 WEEKS.  To say I am exhausted is an understatement.  She is really testing my resolve to not start CIO until 4 months, I don't know how much longer I can do this and still go to work and function.

  • I've read that it can occur when a babies begin to become more aware of their surroundings and gets distracted while feeding during the day.  Because they don't take in enough calories during the day, they wake at night to make up for it.  You could try reducing distractions while feeding during the day and feeding more frequently?

This is totally normal.  I didn't STTN until I was 10 months old.

    Tried.

    It's not helping.

What has worked when DH is willing to do it is doing a bottle dream feed just before he would normally wake up the first time (around midnight). He'll only drink 1-2 oz, but it seems to buy me another 2-3 hours.

Although I'm not sure if it works or if we got lucky. It's always hard to tell with a baby.

Things have been rough for about 3 weeks. Not every night, but a lot of them. Down at 8, up at 12, 2, 4,5,6,7...

  • Yikes Token, I hope it gets better soon.  (the below is not related to your post, but a response about my 4m wakeful experience)

Georgia seems to be eating much less per feeding during the day, but maybe she's just faster.  For the past few nights she's gone down at 8, woken up around 1 then again at 4, then 8.  At night she either wants to stay wide awake and play or eat a small snack and fall back asleep.  I've been feeding her if she wants it because i'm pretty sure she't not eating enough during the day. she did just start rolling over last night, and i've heard that they do wakeful periods around developmental milestones anyway.  hopefully she goes back to normal soon.

  • I'm guessing this is what we're dealing with too.  Except she's down at 8, then up at 9, 9:30, 10:00, 11:00, etc. until she eats at 2, then maybe sleep for 2 hours if I'm really lucky.  The only way I can get her to sleep for longer than 2 hours is with me which I can't help think is going to set up a nasty habit to break soon.  She started this right before I went back to work this week and it's been brutal.  She hasn't even tried rolling, so I don't think it's that, but I think she might be starting to teeth and she has a mild cold.  She's never STTN, but this is wayyyyy worse than normal.
