Baby Names

A little issue I'm having.

H and I aren't TTC yet but will be soon. I'm jumping the gun a bit here.

H is Native American so I'd really like at least one of our kids to have a native name. I LOVE Winona.

Here's my issue.

Our last name is Ryder.

Winona Ryder

What do you think? It's not like our last name is Jolie and I'm naming our possible future daughter Angelina.

Re: A little issue I'm having.

  • I wouldn't; sorry!

I think that name would be on the same fame level as Angelina Jolie (etc.)

  • Actually, I think it's very similar to naming your daughter Angelina Jolie.

I would definitely side-eye parents that chose WInona Ryder

  • That's a definite no, and it would be absolutely no different than naming your daughter Angelina if your last name was Jolie.  Don't do this to your child.
  • I wouldn't do it.

  • There's no way I would do that.  Even if Winona Ryder is slightly less well known than Angelina Jolie, she is known for being a shoplifter.  Since I'm half Chinese I wanted all my kids to have Chinese middle names.  Could you do something like that?  Then it's easier for all your children to have that part of their heritage.

  • Ummm. No. I think you may be joking, but just in case, NO. Winona Rider is a really famous actress with a cult following still. She was the IT girl of the 90's and it's not like people will forget that. I mean she was in EVERYTHING! She's was like the Molly Ringwald of her time. AND she was caught shoplifting. Your kid will deal with that assimilation forever, no getting around it.

  • I have a friend named Jackie Chan (female) and I work with a woman named Jane Eyre, and you don't even think about it after you know them for five minutes. BUT every time they introduce themselves to anyone, people have to go through the mental process of "Oh, I know that name," make a comment about it, Jackie/Jane pretend to be amused. It's not a big deal, just a PITA. And people make a lot of stupid jokes.

  • I feel your pain. I love the name Flynn if our LO is a boy but DH has vetoed it since our last name is Stone. Personally I think it's cute, not too many kids his age would know the Flinstones however my family has a tendency to give nicknames very often and I can see him being called Fred alot, not a name I love.

  • Don't do it, lol.
  • Awww, yeah, you can't use it.

I'm sorry, I love that name too, but you just can't with your last name. Out of the question.

I'd go for a different Native American name or use it for a MN. Winona Ryder is way too identifiable (and for all the wrong reasons in the past few years) to saddle your kid with that name.

  • Don't do that!!

  • No, the name is too well known and associated with a famous person. Choose another.

  • Are you kidding? No one has forgotten who Winona Ryder is. I'd pick a different name.

  • Absolutely not.

Though I did meet Winona Ryder once and she was very sweet. But still, absolutely not.

  • i'm not seeing the diff between winona and angelina.  a celeb name is a celeb name.

at the same time i think that in years to come a future generation will not know winona the way we do and i think the association will fade as your kid gets older.

i still don't think you should do it.
