is there a time that I no longer have to worry about supply issues or will I have to keep pumping every 3-4 hours to keep my supply...
I would love to breasfeed LO for at least a year but I can't imagine pumping at work until then...does their milk demand decrease when they start eating solids at 6 months? Could I just feed her in the am or in the afternoon when I get home at that point?
TIA
Re: breastfeeding question
Breastfeeding is all about supply and demand. Your body will adjust to what her needs are. There are many women that choose to only feed before and after work and supplement in the middle of the day (if needed). There is no wrong answer. It's a matter of finding what works for you, your baby, and your schedule.
If you want your supply to remain what it is now, then yes, you would still have to try and pump as consistently as possible. Your baby will have less milk when they are on solids, but not usually right away. When you first start them on cereal their milk is still the main way they get their nutrients. As the baby starts getting older and eating more foods then yes, there will be a decrease in feedings of milk. If I remember correctly then although we started solids at 6 months I noticed I was feeding less often by 8 - 9 months.
It's all about supply and demand. If you plan to continue to feed around the clock (every 3-4 hours), then you have to BF or pump every 3-4 hours to maintain your supply. Solids may be started at 6 months and supply may tank a bit or adjust itself depending on how much baby is eating. But do keep in mind that the main source of nutrition until the age of 1 is milk! If you decide to not pump or BF during work, then your supply will inevitably decrease, particularly during those times on a daily basis. You can continue to BF at home in the mornings and evenings and if you are consistent you may be able to maintain your supply during those times. But it's important to realize that all women are different. Some may be able to maintain supply in the mornings and evenings while decreasing supply during the working hours while others may note a decrease in supply period.
I pesonally BF/pump around the clock to maintain my supply. I BF in the morning/evenings and if I can't get out of work to BF baby, I pump during that time. It's not the funnest thing to do but you get used to it and you can be very efficient when you develop your technique. I never pumped "extra"to have a freezer stash, I just pumped enough for baby to eat. The whole process takes me 10 minutes.
Good luck! :-)
