Cloth Diapering

Is it dumb to buy no disposables at all?

I'm being crazy optimistic in that this whole CD thing is going to work out. I packed my hospital bag today with almost my whole NB stash and I'm so excited to try them out. I got to thinking though - is it dumb to have no sposies on hand at all? I literally have ONE....it's the one I got free from registering at target. I'm just afraid if I buy them, DH or I will be tempted to use them, and I figure that if I really end up needing them, one of us can run to the store. What do you think? Did you have disposables on hand just in case?

  • They give you a bunch at the hospital (if you have your baby there). I didn't have them on hand, but really, how hard is it to have hubby run to store? Easy fix if you find you want one.

  • Are you really taking your dipes to the hospital? I was gung-go re: my cloth but I can't imagine using them at the hospital w/meconium, getting hospital staff trained, keeping track of the dupes, etc. It's just my humble opinion, but I'd highly recommend using sposies at the hospital at the very least. To answer your question, I don't think it's bad to have no disposables. I didn't buy any but we were given a few. Truthfully, I'm incredibly thankful that we were. Life was so hectic those first few days! I ended up having a very long labor and experiencing a complication several days after going home. DS's newborn stash didn't really fit well until around 4 weeks, too (he was 7.5 lbs at birth but fairly long). As far as being tempted by the ease of disposables? Just for the first few days while we were getting used to the CDs. After 3-4 days, we had the hang of them and would never want to go back! My advice would be to use the disposables at the hospital and get one package for home. You may go through the diapers faster than you think and need them. Also, you will likely be way more tired and overwhelmed than you can even fathom. Give yourself the option to worry about one less thing during those first few days.

  • Well, we have only used cloth and I've never even touched a disposable. We don't have any in the house. We haven't ever wished we had them. I am so confused about this whole meconnium debate. I feel like people who tell you not to use CDs during that phase didn't use them then so they really don't know. I had no staining, no issues getting them clean, and absolutely no complications with meconium and cloth. My mom was a huge proponent of having disposable around "just in case" and she got completely over it once she saw how easy cloth was. I'm not sure what the just in case scenario would be.
  • I used the disposables the hospital gave us and once those were gone I switched to cloth.  I think J was a week old.  He's never been in a disposable since.  I never bought any or kept any around the house.

  • I just have the ones I stole from the hospital and 2 small packages that were gifts.

I think I've used maybe 8? And that was just after we got home and people were taking care of the baby when I was resting. H and I had no problem with CDing off the bat but explaining it to others when I just wanted a nap was a PITA for a bit.  I also threw some in the diaper bag once for the sitter when I had to go somewhere fast and ran out of time to wash.

Best answer ever. If you're gung ho, just use the ones from the hospital, and go buy some if you find you need them for some reason.

    GL!

  • We had like 2 in newborn size from random places, we still have them because I never used them. The last week of my pregnancy I thought, oh we should have a package just in case! And then I found out a package is $11 at the grocery store and I decided I'd rather just get another fitted or something if I was going to spend that much. :)

Meconium definitely comes right out, and if you absolutely need some sposies, send someone out for them - the baby can stay in cloth for the twenty minutes it'll take to get to the store and back.

  • If I have the birth center birth that I want, we will take 3 or 4 diapers with us and use them from the start.

If we have a hospital birth then I will leave the cloth at home (so I don't have to worry about losing any) and use the sposies the hospital provides.

  • I didn't buy any. We brought home the open pack from the hospital and used those until they were gone, then switched to CD.

  • We were given some disposables from a friend whose infant had outgrown them, but I never used them.

We used disposables in the hospital.  I wouldn't bring cloth.  DD was in the NICU for a week, so we were dressing her in her own clothes and more than a few outfits ended up in the hospital laundry.  Luckily I was able to find all of them, but I would really hate for one of my diapers to get thrown away or lost.

Otherwise, no, I didn't need them.

  • I would have used cloth at the hospital but I ended up packing my hospital bag when I was 8cm dilated...

Having said that, I used disposables while we were in the hospital and then changed him into a CD right when we got home.  I didn't have any sposies in the house at all and it hasn't been a problem.  We are actually CDing on vacation this week.  Save your money or spend it on something else that is more useful. • Everyone that I've heard that has used cloth in the hospital has had no issues at all with staining, smell, etc.  Mostly because the babies hardly go to the bathroom at all during that stage.  Meconium washes right out, too.

We didn't use cloth, but only because I wasn't prepared.

    EEEEEEE!  You're so close!

  • Looks like there are a couple different schools of thought here.  I say do what you want!  Take the cloth and if you change your mind the hospital will send you home with a few sposies and wipes.

We didn't have any sposies on hand and my plan had been to put J in cloth as soon as we got home.  She had jaundice though, and I was paranoid about the lights ruining the PUL covers (I have no idea if it actually would, don't want to start rumors).  We bought one package of sposies when the hospital ones ran out and it was no big deal.  IF we have more children, I'll definitely CD in the hospital.

    Good luck!

I'm not sure what the just in case scenario would be.

"Just in case" scenario is when your house loses power for a day or two on the day you were going to wash your diapers.

Or when your city gives you extremely late notice about flushing their hydrants and that it may or may not affect your laundry (with rust spots), so don't do it for a couple days.

Both happened to me this summer, glad I had the extra disposables on hand.

It's also when you have extremely reluctant caregivers, depending on your stash (my mother refused to do the prefold, MIL broke the snappi and didn't know how to put the unbroken one on, despite our tutorial.  This was before we had fitteds.)

We haven't had to buy disposables but that's because our friends who use sposies just gift us their remaining diapers when their DS goes up a size. Frankly, we haven't used any of their latest extras, but I am def. keeping them on hand.

If you want to feel prepared, buy a pack of diapers at the grocery, tape the receipt to them, and keep it in the closet. You can always return them, and it's incentive not to "break open" the pack, unless you absolutely have to.

See this is what I've heard from everyone who's CD'd at the hospital...I think I'll be fine :)

Awesome - I'm glad to hear it comes right out...I'm not too worried about it now. After sleeping on it, I sort-of realized if I REALLY need disposables, I can get disposables, no big deal...and like most of you said they'll have some at the hospital.

The only thing I'd worry about is losing any of my cloth, but I'll have my husband, doula, and midwife who all know I'm using cloth so hopefully between the four of us, we'll be good :)

    I know! I can't believe it, but I can't wait :)

Thanks for all the thoughts everyone!

  • We've never used or had disposables and my daughter is 5 months old.  We used cloth straight from birth.  We have traveled, been without power for 24 hours, and still used cloth.

This. We went through about a pack of NB in the first week or so while slowly easing into CDs.
