C-sections

A comment from my grandma

My grandma and I were talking yesterday and she happened to say that she thinks it would be so much easier to just have a csection than to have a "regular birth".  At first I wanted to be like "are you serious"? but then I remembered that she is from a different time period. When I started explaining to her what they actually do she started saying oh really? I had no idea that it was that invasive." HUH???? This whole conversation kind of perplexed me.

Re: A comment from my grandma

  • Huh. Wondering how she thought the baby got out if not invasively.

My c/s was so easy and recovery went well, so I can honestly say I think it easier than most vaginal births.

This was my experience as well! I was initially upset at finding out the c/s was necessary (I was in labor for 14 hours prior), but I had an easy recovery and my body felt normal after 2 weeks.

  • I heard this comment as well from several older generation relatives...::shakes head:: I sometimes think they believe I got pregnant from eating a watermelon seed...

  •  Well, I should have also added that I had a terrible recovery. I was fine with it emotionally. I know that everyone has very different experiences with both c-section and vag. birth, but I just think that the comment that ANY birth is "easier" is just a total misconception.

  • LOL!  I cannot complain though.  I had two fantastic c-section experiences.  Two of my friends have had horrible vaginal births with lasting physical problems so when OB suggested a c-section I did not argue.

I'm in this boat as well.
Mine was planned though, so I went in with more of an open mind than I would have if I had labored for a long time and then went in for an emergency.

  • Keep in mind, they probably didn't even give any pain drugs when your grandma gave birth...

So yeah, I'm sure that to her, a surgery seems less painful... but it's probably not lol

  • That's funny!  My mom always made seem as if a c-section was like the worst. most painful thing ever.  She's 53 years old.  She was so shocked at how well I recovered after my C-section, she was like, "Wow, I didn't think you would be able to walk for three weeks." She said that that is what she was used to.

  • That story is pretty funny!  I can see some of my older relatives feeling that way, and after laboring for a long time and pushing with no pain relief I can kind of see where (maybe?) your Grandma was coming from.  My recovery was great physically, I'm not scared at all to have another c/s.
  • I am trying to decide whether to have a c-section or try vaginally for my second birth following some complications from my first vaginal delivery.  Everyone has opinions on which is easier.  I think it is often a grass is greener thing.  As I told my husband, there is no good way to get this baby out of me!  Smile

This is for me too, except my mom is 59.  When I was up walking around the next couple of days she was amazed.

  • The older generation seems to not understand c-sections well! I had a women in a store (mid to late 60's) that I didn't "really give birth" because the baby was "ripped out of me"... something along those lines. I was completely speechless.

  • I am still amazed by the things people feel free to say to you about your children both before and after they are born.  My son was born via c-section due to placenta previa, and before the planned c-section my MIL told me I was a cheater because I was having a c-section. I told her know I was just trying to ensure I had a healthy baby.  My MIL doesn't have a ton of medical knowledge and   I know she didn't mean it they was I took it but it is amazing how people perceive c-sections.
