Brice's Birth Story! PsIP

Hey Ladies!  Sorry it has taken me a little while to get my birth story on here. Things have been a little crazy! Anyway, here ya go!  :)

Thurs 9/1 (4 days before my due date), I went about my day like usual, had lunch with a friend and did some errands.  Got home right before my husband did from work and around 4 started having some contractions.  I'd had some irregular contractions for about a week by this point so I didn't think anything of it.  I wasn't really feeling that great by this time and thought my lunch wasn't agreeing with me (which could have been the case) and laid down for a nap.   Woke up about 6:30 or so to some more contractions.  DH and I waffled a little bit on dinner because neither one of us wanted to cook, but by the time 7:30 rolled around I had been having regular contractions between 6-8 min apart.  We got in the car and headed to get something to eat because I knew something was happening.  As we are going through the drive threw my contractions now are about 5 min apart.  DH got us home quick and we ate, me inbetween contractions.  I decided I wanted to go walking around the block for a little bit to make sure things were continuing.  I was timing my contractions by now and they were about 3-4 min apart.  After one of our trips around the block I needed to go to the bathroom.  I went and stood up, thought I wasn't done yet, sat back down and felt a little gush.  I wasn't sure exactly what it was but told DH it was time to go to the hospital since the contractions were so close together and my water could have broken.  Meanwhile, I can't get ahold of my OB during any of this.

Got to the hospital around 9 and they got me all hooked up.  She did the test to see if my water broke and told me it was negative.  She went ahead and checked me and I was a fingertip dilated and about 90% effaced.  The day before at my OB appt I was "all closed up".  They decided to monitor me since my contractions were coming close together.  I told her that I wanted to walk around some more because I wasn't really ready to stay in the bed by this point because I just knew he was coming and I wasn't going to be leaving.  They monitored me for a little bit and then finally let me get up and walk around at about 10pm.  I walked for about 45 min and then when she checked me again I was still only a fingertip but 100%.  She them told me I was going to be admitted because the baby's heart rate was a little high and my contractions were still coming pretty quick.  At 2:30am I was checked again and was dilated to 3-4 cm so I went ahead and asked for my epi, and let me tell you it was WONDERFUL!  She did tell me that she didn't feel my bag of waters to the earlier test was probably wrong.  By 5am I was dilated 7-8cm and I started to feel my contractions in my vag.  It was not pleasant.   I guess the epi was only working on my contractions in my belly because I felt everything down below.  It sucked really bad.  But I was getting through them.  When she checked me at this time she said she felt something hard and wanted to have another nurse come in and check me because she wasn't sure what it was.  The second nurse to check me said the same thing so they went ahead and called my MW.  She came in and checked me and said I had a hematoma on my cervix I believe (sorry by this point I wasn't really sure what was up or down).  She didn't seem concerned too much and I just continued on.

By 8am I was almost fully dilated except a lip on my cervix so they wanted me to start pushing, although my body had already kind of started by this point to push him down because he was at -2 station still, but I was finally going to help them along.  I pushed for about an hour when my OB finally came in to see me and check my progress.  Baby was at 0 station but again he felt something hard.  He determined that my tailbone was curved and the baby's head was probably going to get stuck on it.  He told me to continue pushing and that we would discuss my options in a little bit after we saw how things went.  This is what the hard spot the nurses felt and the MW diagnosed as a hematoma, but was wrong.  I pushed for another two hours and got the baby all the way to +2 station, but we were stalled.  My OB basically told me that my curved tailbone was the size of his thumb and that the baby wasn't going to break it or get past it.  He gave me two options, he could try and break it, or I could go in for a c-section.  I started to lose it.  He told me the risks of both and my first thought was for him to just break it because I'd come so far and wanted to get my baby out.  My stepmom was very leery about it and was trying to convince me to rethink what I was doing.  I guess I wasn't paying attention because the recovery time of a broken tailbone was a lot longer and more difficult than the c-section recovery time.  And hurts a lot worse.  He attempted to push on it to break it, but I just couldn't handle it so I told him to stop and that we would just go in for the c-section.  He looked at me and said he thought that was the better idea.

My DH had the video camera set up in the corner of the room to catch the baby coming out (not pointed at my vag, but more behind me) and my OB asked if we wanted to c-section taped.  I told him I wasn't sure.  They took me in and got me all ready to go and when my OB walked in he asked about the video camera, if DH had brought it in, when I said I didn't know he went himself to my room and got it for us. Now looking back I am so glad my OB is wonderful like that and did that for us.  It is a wonderful experience to share with my family and it wasn't too graphic either they way it was positioned.  And once the baby was out it was turned directly towards him!  I got to see him get cleaned up and all his initial checks done!

Brice Michael was born 9/2 at 12:06pm weighing 6lbs 7oz and 18 1/2 in long.  He scored 9 and 9 apgars.  Breastfeeding has been a challenge, but after a couple of days we finally got it down.  He sleeps like a champ! We are so blessed.

And now for the pics!!! :)

I finally got to meet my little man!

    Thanks Ladies!

I'd never heard of it before either.  My OB said that most people with this problem have very small ones that the baby breaks and don't have any problems, but mine  happen  to be much bigger than normal! :(
