1st Day of Preschool a total disaster

Adam started a 2 day a week preschool this morning and it was horrible.  We have just started OT and Speech for SPD and are still waiting our apt with a developmental pedi.  Honestly, I knew he was behind, but this morning was a huge eye opener for how much behind.  I had to go get him and his teacher told me they really were just not prepared for Adam's behavior.  Apparently he tried to eat the crayons (he always does), wouldn't sit in his seat to eat a muffin or drink anything form his cup at snack time (it was an open cup, they did not use the sippy cup with staw I sent), and wouldn't participate in any of the songs or story time.  They then told me that the other kids in class all did these things and are younger than Adam so maybe he should go down a level to their baby classroom.  At this point I'm just going to not go back and put it in our we are just not ready for this list because with therapy 2 days a week I don't think Adam or I are ready for yet another challenge at this point in our lives.  I know I'm doing everything I can for Adam and I'm lucky my pedi listen to me an was on board with getting him help early, but I can't help but feel so heartbroken today that we are so far behind.

Sorry I know there are really no real questions here I just needed to vent to someone that might have some advice.

  • :( Sorry it was such a bad day. I see that he is only 2 so you have time to get interventions in place and try another program at a later day. I personally think you made the right decision not to put him in the baby room.

  • Yuck.  Sorry it was so frustrating.  Honestly, if I were you I might look into other preschool programs.  It's not that unusual for a two-year-old on the first day of class to have a hard time participating/sitting still/etc., and if what you described was enough to have them call you to come get him, they're not going to be very supportive when he truly does have bad days.  None of that sounds all that bad - if they can't handle minor issues like that, I say a) they're overly demanding preschool teachers, and b) you'll want a program that is more flexible for him and willing to help him learn how to do things instead of suggesting that you move him to a class where kids don't do it yet.  If you find a supportive program (maybe ask his therapists if they can recommend one) it can be enriching for him, and a little break for you.

And, for what it's worth, don't get too down on his progress.  From what you're saying, he doesn't sound that far behind.  Maybe there's more that you aren't sharing, but truly - some typical kids do have a hard time with sitting still and participating.  And the crayon eating, well... lots of kids do that.  My mom used to be a preschool teacher and they basically stopped using crayons because it was such a problem.  They went to washable markers and that was that.

    Good luck!

  • I'm sorry.  My son had the same struggles at first.  He is simultaneously in Ot, PT, and ST.

Andrew goes to a school that is very accepting of kids with needs, but kids without needs go there too.  It took a couple of weeks, but now he totally knows the routine.  he sits at snack time.  He is starting to particpate in circle time.  He knows all the rules.  His program is also 2 days a week.  I think if you could find a program willing to work with him (totally key here!) then it's a great thing and I bet he'll catch on!

    Hugs!

  • And in line with what the previous PP said, I agree that it's odd that they wouldn't work with him to teach him to sit, for example, during snack time!  I mean, that's what preschool is about at this age, teaching them how to behave and participate at school.  Kids who haven't been in this environment aren't going to follow all the rules yet, and they should expect an adjustment period at this age.

I did a whole lot of research and talking to schools before selecting one.  Maybe if you ask around you can find one that is more accommodating!
