Gemma.. or other G names?

Hey Ladies!! Wanted to get your thoughts on a girls name Gemma. Do you think it would get mispronounced... or teased by associating it with Germ or something awful like that? Our last name starts with a G, and I LOVE names where the first letter is the same for first/last names... any other ideas otherwise? :) Thank you!

Re: Gemma.. or other G names?

  • I love the name Gemma! I had a moment where I was dedicing if I wanted to pick that for my daughter. I think you should go with it. I like to think Gemma would only be associated with gems and nice things! Haha, I think if you love it, go with it. Good luck :)

  • I'm sure if you try hard enough you can find a way to make fun of any name, so I wouldn't worry to much. I like Gemma well enough, it is not a name I would use personally but it's fine. Someone might mess up pronunciation but it seems obvious to me, I can't even think of how else they might say it. I also like Georgia and Gioia (Joy-ah) has popped up on the board a couple times and I think it is very pretty but would definitely get mispronounced.

  • I doubt Gemma will get mispronounced. The teasing possibility is there. But that's true of every single name out there. I don't think Gemma will get teased more than anyone else.

    Suggestions: Guinevere, Greta, Georgia, Gloria

  • Love Gemma!  This may be partially due to my love of Sons of Anarchy, but I think it's a great name nonetheless.
  • I think Gemma is a beautiful name.  I wouldn't think it would get mispronounced very often, and I don't associate it with germs at all :)

  • I like it and I don't think it would get mispronounced.  DH loves it and we likes that it can serve as a feminine version of James, which is important to us for #2.  It sounds very British to me :)

  • I love Gemma and would totally use it if my FIL didn't have dog named Gemma.

He also named his dogs Sally and Jack, so obviously he has a thing for naming dogs people names.

  • Gemma is pretty popular in the UK - and for me, it's just meh.  A friend of mine just called her daughter Gia - which I like much more.

  • I am clearly the anomaly, because I think Gemma is one of the ugliest names I've ever heard in my entire life. Yet everyone loves it. I can't figure this out, but I am obviously wrong in my hatred of it. :)
  • I like Gemma, but my favorite name is Geneva

  • I taught a girl who's name was Gemini (ick) who went by Gemma (thank God). I also taught a Geordana who went by Geo.
