1st Trimester

spotting

I am having a little bit of brown discharge.  It seems to happen in the afternoons.  It isn't enough to need a panty liner just when I wipe I see it is a little brown.  Any ideas?  I have talked to my doctor who said to take it easy and it should be fine and that unless i start bleeding like I am having my period things should be fine, but I am scared it is something more.  First pregnancy and everything is freaking me out.

Re: spotting

  • As long as it's brown and it's not a flow like your period, you're fine.  You might want to take it a little easier, tone down the exercise (if you're exercising)

My doc told me I'd probably spot after my annual pap smear, it really freaked me out, so I know what you're feeling!

  • 70% of all pregnancies have some bleeding at one point. How far along are you? If it's brown then it's old blood, which could be left over from implantation. It could also be an irritated cervix (sex, constipation) etc. I had it at 15 weeks with DD. 1 spot of bright red blood. freaked me out, but I went on to have a healthy baby girl. She is now over 2. Try not to worry too much. If you have lots of painful cramping and the blood becomes heavy, then you need to get checked out.

  • Usually (from what I've been told), brown blood= old blood.  It could be implantation bleeding, or your body getting rid of old blood from your last period.  Unless you are bleeding bright red blood and having cramping, it is most likely normal.  Yes, it is a very scary time, but the most important thing you can do right now is to relax, and not stress/worry yourself.  Good luck.
  • I've had the same thing twice this pregnancy. Once right after my BFP and then again all last week. I had an u/s last week and everything looked fine. The doctor said not to worry, that it was probably just old blood getting pushed out.
  • Thanks y'all.  I am 5 weeks and 4 days.  We have been trying for a while, so I think I am just overly nervous about this.  I just want things to be okay, but this helps.  I will tone down excercising and do my best to not worry so much.  Smile if that's possible!  Thanks again!

  • I had some brown spotting last week, a few days after I pulled a muscle. Since you're fairly early, this could be old implantation blood. Since it's brown, it's definitely old. Are you doing anything in the afternoons that might cause this? Carrying too many bags? going to the gym? At one point I spotted after carrying a gallon of milk, so it can be almost anything.

I'd call your doctor, just in case. I only spotted one day for about 2 hours total and the midwife wanted me to got the ER for an ultrasound anyway. (And it made me feel better when I saw that everything was fine).

  • I had light brown discharge with my first pregnancy and everything turned out fine.  So far nothing with this one though.  I asked my Doc and he said it could be old implantation spotting.

  • Yes, yesterday I walked 2 miles just bc the weather was so nice and after that I spotted twice and then today I spotted once so far.  it is brown and just a tiny discharge.  The nurse said not to worry brown=old and she would make a note for my doctor, but not to worry.  I have a hard time not worrying though!  :)

  • I know how hard it is to not worry. I'm on my third pregnancy and recently had spotting and freaked out. I've spotted at different points in every pregnancy-some had causes, others didn't. With this recent scare, the cause was undetermined but an ultra sound showed a strong heartbeat.

Best of luck to you. Try to take it easy and if you are still spotting, ask your dr if he/she will do an early ultra sound for you.
