Like most of us.. it's the weight gain worries..

I am now at 30 weeks and am up 30 lbs. I was a good average weight of 135lbs, 5'4" and very athletic, but now that all just seems like a vanishing vision.. This is my second pregnancy, with my first I gained a whopping 80 lbs and managed to loose it all, then again I was only 17 that time around. Had a 8lb 6 oz baby!! And didn't breastfeed. Think it was all the luck of the age.. lol

I would never try to diet while pregnant bc the life and health of my baby is to precious to sacrifice, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to possibly keep my total around 40 lbs?! I am trying to watch what I eat but I just LOVE anything sweet (-_-)

Thanks ladies.. happy and healthy pregnancies to all!!!

  • Now that you are at 30weeks I think you will start to see your appetite is going down rapidly. I bet you end pretty close to your 40lb goal.

I am up 29lbs and hoping to not pass 40 as well. I never gain a lot at the ned so Im hopeful.

  • I have a problem with sweets too! For the first 5 months I would walk about 2 miles every evening and I only gained around 10lbs by 21 weeks. I stopped walking and have since gained almost 15lbs. Needless to say, I started walking again! I also try to eat only 1 bad sweet thing a day.

  • I'm also up about 30 pounds and was normal weight to begin with. I'm not worried about it. I gained about 40 with DS and I did notice that my weight gain with him was greatest in 2nd tri and slowed down during 3rd. My motto is don't gorge yourself but don't deprive yourself either. If you are hungry, eat, and eat lots of high fiber stuff to keep you full.

  • I'm up from 153lb to 200lb (yup, a whopping 47lb) and I'm 5ft 11in. I've been walking but that's a far cry from my pre-pregnancy exercise regime, and I have eaten as I planned - 'what I want, when I want'. LO is healthy and well, I don't have GD, my Dr hasn't said anything, my BP is normal and both DH and I weighed 10lb exactly at birth. So, I believe in listening to your body, giving it what it wants in terms of food and exercise on any given day, and staying away from the scale. (I only know my weight because they make me do it at Dr appts.) Good luck, don't put too much pressure on yourself  and you'll be fine :-)
  • Maybe try "healthier sweets" A couple of my go to sweets are graham crackers with low fat cool whip, mix cool whip with butterscotch pudding (just the mix the dry mix into the cool whip) and dip granny smith apples in, skinny cow ice cream.

  • I've gained 30 lbs as of last week and my Dr. said ideally she would like me to only gain 5 more. I asked her how that was possible since I have 11 weeks to go. She said to start counting calories and eat no more than 2200 per day. Also to increase my walking. I have to admit, now that I keep track of the calories I'm eating, I can see why I gained 30 to begin with. I was eating cookies and candy bars like they were going out of business. I still allow myself a daily sweet that's under 150-200 calories/day.

  • I bet you'll end up right around 40 lbs since I think 3rd tri weight gain tends to be around 1 lb/week. By the way I just want to say thanks for posting about the 80lb weight loss from your 1st child. That is inspirational to hear! If you did that then, you should have no trouble losing this weight this time around.

  • This post makes me feel so much better. I had an appointment yesterday and I've gained 35 pounds. I was floored. I made it through the appointment ok, but was totally hysterical the whole ride home and most of the evening.  I think I went a little overboard with the dessert once my sweet tooth came back last month. I also really need to start working out more. It's going to be really hard, but I know I have to do it...

  • I feel like I have been packing on the pounds so rapidly in the last five weeks it is frightening.  I don't even feel like I am eating that much more.  I remind myself that some of it is water retention and our amniotic fluid levels are at their highest point between 30-32 weeks.

Weight gain should slow down in the last few weeks of pregnancy unless you are having a lot of water retention (which I don't really consider to be "weight gain").  So you should be close to your goal.  Stress will cause your body to store weight, so try to be as relaxed as possible about it.  I know it it hard because I am three pounds away from my total weight gain goal with 8 weeks left.  Not going to happen :(

This made me so sad when I read this Teffie :( Please don't be so hard on yourself - Just try and stay positive, and don't get too stressed out. As long as yours and LO's health stays well, just take it day-by-day and make the little changes that you feel you want to make. I support you :-)

  • I hopped on the scale yesterday and was shocked that I am at 30 pounds as well. Today I got on and it was only 27 so I am going to go with that ;) I kind of freaked out a little too, because I thought I was doing better this time around. I was in the exact same place last pregnancy at this point and gained a total of 42. I lost all but 5 pounds of it by about 2 months ppartum and the rest came off with a little disciple and exercise and BFing. I ended up 15 pounds lighter than my prepreg weight last time. So, hang in there, weight gain will slow and your body will do what it needs to do. You can get the weight off after baby comes. I have been horribly awful about sweet these last few weeks so I am trying really hard to drink lots of water and eat fruit (although I did just have a piece of cake)!!!!
  • It seems that no matter what I do I gain about 2lbs per week. My first doctor was super strict and when I was 1lb over what I "should have" weighed told me to cut out all fruit and carbs from my diet. Even doing that I still gained 2lbs per week. When I switched doctor's they seemed much less concerned about my weight gain and said that they personally would never tell a pregnant woman to cut out any food groups like that so I went back to eating normally and have been steadily gaining about 2lbs per week. I have pretty much accepted I am going to gain twice what I "should". My doctor's aren't concerned at all and haven't said a thing to me about my weight gain so I am just not going to worry about it until after the baby is born when there is actually something I can do about it.

  • I have gained 30 lbs as well! I was surprised when they told me the weight because I'm mostly all belly.  However, I haven't been holding back on the sweets! It's really hard not to eat something sweet every day!

Yep, this is me!!  I did not eat sweets in the beginning.  3rd tri hit and it was hello ice cream.  DH even has cravings for milkshakes!!!  I still eat really well, but I can't help the sweets now.

This post really did help me, too.  I am all belly and fat feet (they swell) Stick out tongue  With the weather getting nicer I am taking up more walking.  But, I am really tired so it's kinda hard.

Awh thanks.  I was just so dedicated to working out and maintaining my weight pre-preg and it's been hard watching it all go, but I know it's for a good reason and I can always go back to what I was doing after the baby is here.

  • Can you exercise? When I gained over 6lbs in a month (total weight gain now 20lbs at 29 weeks, more than I wanted) I cut back on extra snacks, mindless eating, and starting walking more.

If I were you, I would add a daily walk and get rid of the sweets in your house!

Ditto!! I am tough on myself too.. just because I know what my limits are and I know I can do better, but self control at this point and the whole mind over body thing is sooo difficult right now. And.. If it helps, I did gain 13 of my 30 lbs in one month.. yeah tell me about it?!!...Pre-pregnancy I was a religious weight lifter.. now nothin'.. I'm sure it'll all come back again, just like riding a bike! Lol. well sort of :) We'll get there again, plus if you have a good size baby be looking at around 20 lbs before you the hospital!!! I have faith in us girl!!

  • At a little over 31weeks I have gained 29lbs.. I feel like I am retaining everything. I would like to only gain 35lbs but I dont see that happening. Pre-pregnancy I was 5'8" 136lbs in shape. This has been really hard for me to deal with too considering this is the heaviest i have ever been and I weigh more than DH. I try to think about after the baby is born what healthy lifestyle changes I can make.

  • oh man, you ladies are making me feel so much better.  I'm up about 35 pounds and am only 28 weeks.  I haven't been eating like crazy though- my weight went up about 14 pounds by 6 weeks... and I've been watching my food intake ever since and am still exercising (running)  5 times a week.... I think as long as my baby is measuring on track and not ahead, my doctor won't really get on my case.  until then, i'm going to watch what i eat and keep exercising....
