Pregnant after IF

cold medicine while pregnant?

I somehow caught a cold and now I'm congested and all clogged up.  Normally I would take some nyquil and call it a night.  I called my ob and am waiting for her to call me back, but I was wondering what some other ladies have done?  I have some sudafed in my medicine cabinet.  WWYD?

  • Forgot to say I'm 24 weeks now, in case that makes any difference.

  • I have been having some allergy/sinus issues lately. I called and spoke with a nurse. She said that Benadryl, Claritin, and Sudafed but not the multi-symptom/extended action Sudafed. I actually find that other things help more with congestion (I get very bad sinus infections so I have all my cures)-using Ocean nasal spray to flush out your nose, sleeping with those nose strips on, drinking lots of hot drinks or soup, and when it's really bad I'll run a super hot shower and just sit it the bathroom while it steams up. HTH!

  • My doctor recommended not taking any medicine. I just used the neti pot and saline nose spray. I was super sick in the beginning of my pregnancy with a nasty sinus infection, but stuck it out with no meds and it lasted a week.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

  • I was extremely sick a few weeks ago and I didn't take anything. When I called my doctor the receptionist said I could take Tylenol cold, but since I didn't hear it straight from my dr. and I've heard from SO many people not to take anything, I opted not to. I was miserable and wanted to tear my nose off my face, but I got through it. I've heard so many mixed things so I decided to just err on the side of caution...hope you feel better soon!

  • I was given a list of meds I could take and for a cold the only thing I could pretty much take is Tylenol if I had a headache but I was advised to let the cold run its course and not to take anything.

  • My doctor said I could take plain sudafed if I really had to.

I would highly recommend buying the saline solution that is in a can. It is sort of pressurized and it can help clean out your sinuses. It was a god-send when I had a cold (and for my allergies). It is only saline solution so it is safe for baby.
