Anyone with a steep driveway?

Speaking of winter, we moved to a home with a steep driveway that makes me cringe thinking about it covered in snow and iced over. We have a service to clean the snow, but do you just throw tons of salt down every night to counteract the overnight freezing? Are there mats/coverings that can help prevent someone from slipping as they are getting to the front door throught the driveway?

Re: Anyone with a steep driveway?

  • Ours is only a problem when it snows. It doesn't ice over regularly, so we don't worry about it. But our driveway is also dirt/gravel, not paved, so maybe that makes a difference? When it gets snowy/icy, we usually park our cars on the street instead of in the driveway until it clears up.

  • Yep- ours is dirt and gravel so we can't put ice melt down or it would be a mud pit. May I suggest these? I wear them when I need to walk up our LONG driveway. Yack Tracks

  • We have a crazy steep driveway.  The past two winters have been rough ones.  Yes, lots of salt.  Salting the night before usually doesn't do much, but DH will get up in the morning and throw out salt before we start getting ready for the day.  By the time I leave the driveway will be ok.

I've never hear of mats to prevent slipping.  We do keep a bucket of salt on the front porch near the front door so we don't have to go out to get the salt and possibly fall then.

Just stock up on the salt when you can!   Oh, and if you have any pavers (fancy bricks), you'll need different salt so you don't damage those pavers.

  • Yep...we actually just sold our house and are moving at the end of October because after last year I can't imagine dealing with it for 20 more years or so.

We had a service...he came frequently and usually made a trip in the early morning before we left for the day.  He tried to just use sand the first year, but that didn't cut it, so we moved onto salt.

I found the more often he came the better because it didn't give the snow/water a chance to turn into ice.  Of course that means more $ (if you are paying per visit), but for us it was worth it.

I hate to say it but even with the service and all the visits he made, I still slipped down the driveway and almost into traffic (our road is busy) a couple of times.  ::sigh::  The perils of living in NE. :(

  • We have a steep and narrow driveway. We use some salt, but more importantly, we traded in our car for something with AWD. It was the only way to make it up the cul du sac, let alone our driveway. The first winter in our house, we ended up having to park at the bottom of the cul du sac and walk up - it really sucked.

DH is pretty good at "controlled sliding" to get us down sometimes. Not my idea of a good time, but with some practice, we get down and back up.

  • We do.  We buy *lots* of rock salt. With the snowstorms that hit us this past winter, we went through 300#.  We just keep a prowctive light layer on everytime the forecat even hints at freezing rain or snow. Its brutal on it, though. I can see us having to repave it in the next 5-8 years.
