3rd Trimester

Starting to get worried

Ok, so my concern is that since I waited so long to go to the dr (delay in insurance from my job "kicking in") that now my EDD is off by like a month.  The main reason is because my ob and the u/s I've had keep telling me that baby is right on track with growth, but I was 9 lbs 1 oz AND my mom smoked the whole time she was pg with me.  Also, my cycle has only been regular when I was on the pill for a couple years when I was 18, but obviously I wasn't on them early this year.

I wanted to ask, is there ANY way to check the baby's lungs BEFORE they are born? This seems like the only reason why they wait to induce, and I don't want this to happen if I get to "40" weeks when she is really only 36... Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Starting to get worried

  • They can do an amnio to test how developed the lungs are.

But if your doctor isn't concerned and you're measuring right on track, I wouldn't worry about it too much. And I'm confused - are they talking induction already? Sorry just the way your post is worded is a little ambiguous.

  • sorry, I've just been talking to friends and relatives and it seems that here in South Florida, most doctors are induction happy.  I definitely don't want it to happen, but seeing other posts about induction, and how if they wait past a certain amt of time, that there is little to no amniotic fluid left.

Btw, how do you keep a signature on your posts, I haven't been able to figure it out, and I tried pasting one from TB, and it just shows the code, not the ticker :/

  • How far along were you when you had your first ultrasound? If you told the doctor when your last period was at the first appointment and the doctor is saying you are right on track I wouldn't worry about it. Are you assuming the baby is behind because it is looking like it won't be 9lbs at birth? I'm sure you don't HAVE to be induced at 40 weeks, you can tell your Dr you don't want to.

  • No, I just want to be sure that she will be ok and not have to go to NICU.  I REALLY want to BF and my friend at work had her baby 2 weeks ago, the baby was only 10 days early, but had to go to NICU for 3 days, and refuses to take the breast, it would really break my heart (and the bank) if we had to formula feed her.  I didn't get an u/s until I was 20+ weeks according to the ob, I don't know, I guess FTM jitters.

  • My advice is to tell them you don't want to be induced until 42 weeks (when they bring it up).  They can't force an induction on you, just strongly suggest it, and honestly unless there are complications there's not a need for induction anyways. That way if you're 42 weeks by their guess and you end up being correct you would still be full term. If they end up being right you probably won't end up making it until 42 weeks anyhow.

  • Sorry to tell u but there are a lot of different reasons for a baby to have nicu. If ur really concerned see if ur doc will order another ultrasound if it stays on the same track Then they are probably close on the estimated due date. Good luck.

  • Think of things positively - maybe you will just go into labor naturally when she is ready! Though if my dr recommended inducing, I'd do whatever they say. My office takes a more natural approach than most though (compared to others in my area). I think your doctor (and you) would know if you were really a month further along!

Also wanted to say - Don't judge your BF experience based off of someone else's and don't let it discourage you either! Everyone is going to be different. That is too bad about your friend but it certainly does not mean it will happen to you.

  • You can tell your doctor no about the induction. My doctor will do an ultrasound prior to an induction to check on the placenta.
