NBR- medical leave question

ok, so i somehow managed to fall at school last week and break my right humerus. (i highly don't recommend it.) i was placed on modified bed rest as a precaution and had surgery to repair the break (it takes talent to break it the way i did, apparently.)  baby girl is TOTALLY fine, thank goodness.

here's my prob:

i was placed on immediate medical leave thru workman's comp (two hours afterr i fell). i hadn't input any grades as of theday of the accident, b/c i was going to work on them overr theholiday weekend. those plans were shot to hell and all of my kids work is at school. well, i logged on to my work email earlier looking for something, and i had a msg from the VP tthat i have 63 students with no grade as of yet and that i need to remedy that. i am not allowed on campus because i'm on leave and modified bedrest, i'm on painkillers (thru my OB) so i'm always tired and need assistance for even the smallest things . so how the hell am i supposed to fix this if i'm working with only one arm and on leave?  i'm stressing out here.  i could use some advice. thanks.

Re: NBR- medical leave question

  • Wow, I don't know. Do you have an HR contact? Whoever was handling your maternity leave is probably your best bet.

  • Is your VP aware that you are gone on medical leave?  I'm pretty sure you can't go on campus to work since you are on workman's comp.  Call your HR/insurance person ask them. It would become you sub's responsibility, I would think.

  • Document in writing to the VP that you are on medical leave - worker's comp. Make sure everyone know needs to know is aware of your comp. claim.

Make sure that your accident is reported and documented in writing ASAP. Even if you told your principal or whomever, it needs to be documented in writing. Ask to fill out an accident form.

Make sure that your medical slip is given to HR.

Keep copies of everything for yourself.

Check your state's WC laws for more info. - what state are you in?

  • Absolutely do not go on campus- it could jeoprodize your WC eligibility.  I wouldn't even consider doing the work from home if it somehow was brought to you, because again, you're not supposed to be working at this point due to medical reasons.

Maybe this person isn't aware of your injury? I would contact them in writing (email?) and explain the situation.  Offer to take a phone conference with someone to provide instructions on how to complete the work while you're out.

  • i am in texas. the vp and the principal were both at the site of my fall before i was put on the ambulance and both were at the hospital with me; they both had normal everyday conversations with my mom while waiting for word on me!!  the vp is the one who contacted HR/risk management in the first place. i called my union rep but he didn't answer so i'm still waiting on him to call me back.  my school secretary aalso said just about what you ladies said and has forbidden me from getting in to my e-mail acct for AANY reason.  (sorry, but typing with one hand is hard; plz exc. the typos!)  i will wait and follow y'all's advice: no working even from home. thanks.

  • If you know what grades the kids should be getting, maybe just contact HR and explain to them that you need paperwork from school in order to do the grading. Maybe they can just mail it to you or have another teacher grade them for you.
