Pregnant after IF

Did you ever change RE's?

I want to get a second opinion from another RE but too afraid to ask for a copy of my medical records from my current RE. I'm also wondering if it is the nerves / anxiety kicking in. If you switched RE's, why did you?

Re: Did you ever change RE's?

  • I did switch RE, but not clinic. I changed to another RE within the same practice. So I didn't have to deal with having my notes transferred etc. I talked it through with one of the nurses, and she said it happens all the time.

FWIW, best decision I ever made - new RE was a much better fit, she gave me much more hope and I think a fresh set of eyes on my notes was very helpful.

Not sure if this was much help as I didn't change clinics entirely, but just wanted to wish you Good Luck!

  • I switched clinics. After 1 1/2 years, 1 lap, 5 IUIs, 2 IVFs and 1 FET it was time for a change.

I just called the office and asked for the release form to have my records sent to another office. The 2 clinics worked together to transfer my frozen embryos and I just had to sign some release forms. No one asked me any questions about "why".

  • I switched clinics too. After 3 unsuccessful IUIs - the first one I was unhappy about because no one told me to start the progesterone suppositories and I started bleeding 3 days later - I decided to switch.

I asked the receptionist for a copy of my file, signed the release form and they mailed me my records. No one asked me "why".

  • I was really nervous about switching from RE#1 to my current RE.  I just felt like my first RE did not take me seriously.  After my 3rd loss, I wanted someone who would make me feel like they were fighting with me, not against me.

However, it was so easy to get the medical records.  I think in this business, REs are used to this.  Asking for a form to release your medical records is common-place and they probably won't bat an eye.

If you are thinking of getting a second opinion, I say go for it.  Nothing says you have to change REs, but it is nice to get a fresh pair of eyes looking at your case.  Good luck!

  • I did and it was the best decision I've ever made. I left my old RE after 2 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs. Don't feel bad about requesting your records- they're yours and you can do whatever you want with them. Also, if you are at all on the fence about your current RE- get a second opinion. It's not worth it to stay with someone you're unsure about.

    Best of luck!

  • I got a second opinion after our 3rd failed IUI. At that point, my RE was not recommending any injectible IUI cycles due to my history of cysts and before we moved to OOP IVF I wanted a second opinion and a second set of eyes. It was no big deal requesting the records- I think they're used to it and a good RE should not hold it against you if you want a second opinion. I ended up sticking with my current RE after I heard the same thing from the other RE (whose bedside manner also really rubbed me the wrong way). We didn't end up doing IVF after all but I would have been much more confident going forward at that point.

After 2 1/2 years TTC, 3 IUI's, endo, and a lap, a surprise BFP brought us Alexandra Marie!

  • I actually saw 3 different clinics during my journey...and it was the best decision I ever made.  I'm a big believer in the second set of eyes...

  • I've been to five different RE's, at four clinics, in two states.  Don't be afraid to ask for your records, they belong to you, though they usually charge you to get copies.

I was unhappy with my 1st RE because she wouldn't consider removing my septum after finding it, and after two Clomid cycles (the 2nd of which I O'd on my own, because she wanted to wait for more follies) she thought we should go to IVF w/o addressing the septum.  The 2nd did a septum resection, but after another failed IUI, I found that there was still much of it remaining.  I also hated her nurse and was unhappy with their response to my requests/complications.  The 3rd was an OOS phone consult to get another opinion.  The 4th/5th were the RE/surgeon and RE would did my last surgery and my IVF cycles.

  • We switched REs, but we moved.

Our old hometown was much smaller than our current one and there was only one practice with 2 REs. So unless we wanted to travel 2 or more hours there wasn't much choice of REs.  I looked at the national success stats and our old RE/practice was on the low end, but we decided to give it a try for convience.  IVF1= BFN, IVF 2.1 converted to IUI (due to dominant follicles) = BFN, IVF 2.2= BFN.

My husband got a new job and we moved from central IL to Indianapolis, which has several RE practices.   This time around, I consulted the national stats again and picked the best in our area.   As it turns out, my old RE also recommended my new RE since he knew him from long ago at a college/residency situation.  IVF #3= BFP with twins, but lost them at 18w1d.

To be honest, even if we hadn't moved, I probably would have switched REs and been willing to drive for IVF #3 since our first couple IVFs weren't successful.

I filled out a form at my old RE's office to have them transfer my records... it was no problem at all.

    Good luck to you!

  • I switched REs simply because I hated the factory feel of the place. The doctor was fine, but it was always hectic and not helpful.

It happens all of the time and it is NOT worth worrying about feelings or such. You are the patient and you need to be empowered in your care. Good luck!

  • I switched REs/clinics.  After a year or so and 2 miscarriages after doing IF treatments (3 cycles of Clomid/IUI and 2 injectables/IUI cycles) with 1st RE, I felt like I needed to get a 2nd opinion.  The 2nd RE I saw was recommended to me by 2 different people, so I felt like I should just go see what he had to say.  I stayed with the 2nd RE and finally had success recently!

I wouldn't feel badly about getting a 2nd opinion.  I think REs are used to their patients getting 2nd opinions and your RE probably won't even be aware that you're getting a 2nd opinion.  I just called and spoke to receptionist @ 1st RE's office and asked to have copies of my records, based on what the 2nd RE wanted.  I didn't tell the receptionist I was getting a 2nd opinion although I'm sure she assumed I was.  It was easy as pie to get the records and I haven't looked back.

    Good luck!

  • I got a second opinion from a different clinic after my second failed IVF cycle.  But, I ended up going back to my original RE for IVF #3.

I think that second opinion helped me with IVF #3 even though I went back to my original RE!
