What method of birth control do you use/prefer and why?

I was on the pill for over 10 years and never had an issue remembering to take it.  I just weaned last weekend, so I want to get back on something, condoms suck.  I'm not opposed to the pill again, just wondering what other's experiences and preferences are.  I have no idea if/when we may want another baby, but monetarily I don't see it even being a possibility for another 3-4 years.

Re: What method of birth control do you use/prefer and why?

  • I cannot be on the pill since I am already prone to blood clots, so we just use condoms.  I plan to get Essure sometime this spring (of course that is permanent, so I'm not sure if this is the answer you are looking for).

  • I use the FAM (fertility awareness method).  Basically, I chart my temps and check my CM like how you would if you were TTC.  Only, we TTA (sorta....we're really not trying and not preventing, either currently).

I had issues with migranes, so I can't take estrogen based BCPs.  So I tried the mini pill, but it gave me a period every other week, and I had zero libido and gained 10-15lbs on it.  So I swore off all hormonal BC after that.  We TTA successfully using that method for a year before trying for DD, and we got lucky on the first cycle of TTC.

  • i love my non-hormonal IUD. its nothing to remember and it does make me feel crazy like hormones did.

  • After talking to my OB, we decided an IUD wasn't right for us at this time and I could not remember to take the pill, so we decided on the Nuva Ring.  As far as BC goes (I was also on the pill for about 10 years) I really like it.  I dont' have to remember to take a pill every night at the same time, insertion is easy, and rarely do I feel it.  DH doesn't feel it at all during sex and it doesn't hurt.  The only downside is that insurance covers next to nothing, so it's about $180 for 3 months, but my OB said there are enough hormones to leave it in for 4 weeks then take it out for the week of your period, so you can stretch it out a bit.

  • When not TTC, I used NuvaRing and was very happy with it.  Personally, I'm terrible at remembering to take a pill, so that was a big part of the appeal.  Also, I liked that it was super easy to skip a period, but I didn't have to get an early refill to do it. My doctor told me I could leave it in for 4 weeks instead of 3 and then immediately replace it.

  • I use Ortho Tri-cyclen and love it.  I was on it from age 17-23 and never had any problems w/ it.  I just got back on it about 3 months ago and I still love it.  It is the easiest form of BC for me.  I take it in the mornings, so I lay my pill pack on my night stand and have never forgot to take it.  I also like how whenever we TTC it is easy to just stop taking it and you could conceive right away.

  • I have taken the pill, the shot and had the Mirena. I have ditched them all. I hate hormonal birth control, so we use condoms and avoid during my most fertile days. I got pretty good at recognizing what signs to look for when we were TTC.

  • I switched over to Nuvaring about 5 months ago and I love it! I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.   I set an alarm in my cell phone for the day it needs to be removed and another one re-inserted.  It is amazing not having to remember a pill every day and I like that it is easily reversible compared to other methods.

  • I got an Implanon. I know some people have had problems with it but it worked perfectly for me. I could use it while I was still BFing and like Mirena it doesn't require you to do anything and lasts for years. Had mine for a year and had it taken out when we started TTC #2. Got pg on my second cycle.
  • My body is my birth control. I guess that is the good only good thing about IF. No worring about taking any precautions.

  • I was on the pill for around 10 years and didn't have any real issues.  I was also on Depo for about a year but really didn't care for it.  After I had DD1 I was on the mini-pill and it failed so we not have DD2.  I will never trust the mini-pill again and we won't use condoms.  Since I'm nursing our best option is Mirena.  I have been on it since early June.  At first I wasn't so sure but now I love it.  I don't have to think about it.  I don't feel it, DH rarely feels it (depends on position-tmi).  My hormones feel normal and I don't have a period. This was a great choice for our family.

  • I was on Nuvaring when I got pregnant with DD (I missed my start date by a day so user error).  Anyway due to that and already feeling like I can barely find my keys and my sanity I decided I should probably go with an IUD.  I had a Mirena put in back in January and other than the constant spotting for the first 3 months or so I really like it.  It's good for 5 years but we will probably get it removed sometime next summer so we can try for another one.  It sucks that it's pretty expensive for only a year and 1/2 of use (obviously a better investment if you are planning to wait several years) but for my sanity it's worth every penny!

  • I was also on the pill for almost 10 years.  I didn't use anything except condoms between the kids and ended up with kids a lot closer in age than planned.  I now have an IUD (Paragard - so no hormones) which I highly recommend if you don't want more kids for at least another 3-5 years.  It's not worth the cost if you don't leave it in for at least 3 years, I think, is what my CNMW told me.  I got my IUD at 8 weeks pp and then DH got a vasectomy a few months ago.  As soon as we get the "all clear" from his doctor, I'll get the IUD out, but we're not taking any chances.  I look at DH and I get PG...literally.  I have no idea where DD#2 came from trying to count back to when she was conceived and everything going on around then.  I mean, it's possible (obviously) but it was so unlikely...
  • Natural family planning, for personal reasons.   It's certainly not fool-proof, but if you do it right, it's actually pretty effective.  Most of the time people don't do it properly, which is why it gets a bad rep.

It would be hard to do for 3-4 years though.

  • I used NFP and have since 2008.  Prior to that I was on the pill for 11 years.  I will never go back on it again or do anything other than NFP.  We've used it both to TTA and to TTC with perfect success even through breastfeeding 17 1/2 months.  It is just as effective as other methods and even more effective than some methods when used correctly.  It is nice to have the artificial hormones out of my system...

This for me too. I was on the pill for 14 years and just thought I was one of those people with no sex drive. When I went off it to TTC after we got married, I was like a new woman. I will never go on hormonal birth control again.

We use NFP, with success to TTA, and now we're using it to TTC!

  • Nuvaring---THE BEST thing ever- for me.  I'd tried several different pills over the years and was spotting throughout the month; finally I tried Nuvaring and it has been awesome.  Used it pre-baby and post-baby and it still works just as well.

  • I can't stand being on BC.  Everything I've tried makes me feel weird from the side effects.  I am not ready for another LO yet either so we just hope it won't happen until it's meant to be!
