TTC after 35

yet another question

Ok ladies here i go again.  I usually see my family doc for all my yearly pap's and since never ttc before, never really thought about OB/GYN.  Now that we're starting this process i want to be as prepared as possible.  The area in which i live does not have many small OB providers.  I would like to have an experience with small practice where only have to deal with a few docs instead of 12.  I was talking to a friend of mine and she was talking about a midwivery clinic a short distance from where i live.  Was wondering if any of you had any experiences with midwives and if they were good/bad/indifferent and your opinions on midwive vs. OB.  You ladies are so helpful and interested in what you have to say.  Please be honest.  Trying to make informed decisions.  Thanks ladies!!!Confused

Re: yet another question

  • I do not have any actual experience with a midwife, but before my mc I had done a lot of research on both options.  I think a lot depends on what type of birth you want to have.  I choose to see a midwife and set up an appointment with one.

For me, it seemed like a midwife would be more willing to work with me to have a very natural birth.  I did not want any medical intervention unless absolutely necessary (specifically I did not want labor induced, to have an epidural, to have to labor on my back, etc.)

I think there are positives to both options.  A good movie to watch is "The business of being born" (be warned there is a definite bias - but it still informative).

    Good luck!

  • My friend used a midwife for the birth of her first child and liked it. You still need to see an Ob for a check up. I think if everything looks fine and it will be a regular birth it would be fine. Personally with the amount of complications that could occur during birth I would rather be with a doctor in a hospital. But I also have an aunt with cerebral palsy and I want to be completely monitored so there is no chance that happens at birth.
  • I understand what you're saying, but don't sometimes i think you can be as careful as you can and still things happen even if with doc in  hospital setting.  I am just thinking too much.  My hubby says i tend to think to much about things.  Thanks for the advice tho.  Will keep it in mind.

  • I have heard more horror stories from births in hospitals than from home births with midwives... I'm sure there are happy outcomes from both!  But even though I am 39, I plan on having my first at home, with a midwife, if at all possible.
  • I wish you all the luck.  I am trying to find some midwives in my general area.  The area in which I live is highly old-fashioned and the hosp i would like to deliver at doesn't allow midwives and are very strict in things they allow.   I am thankful i am trying to figure some of these things out now before the BFP so I have a clue.  Sometimes think, ok, know i think too much.
