Babies: 0 - 3 Months

stiffening up

My LO's day started out good 8 hrs of sleep followed by another 3 after a morning feeding. But it all went downhill from there...

She is EBF and has always had gas troubles. She has BMs every 2-3 days - but had two today - both explosive and her second was a green color. Her eczema flared up. She cried all day long. And every so often she'd stiffen up and scream bloody murder. Poor LO!

Wondering if anyone has experienced the stiffening? I have no idea if it is something I should be worried about or a normal occurrence. Is the combination of these symptoms enough to call the pedi? Or normal?

I'm sorry if the answer to this is obvious - its been a very trying day.

Re: stiffening up

  • Does she have acid reflux? I know the stiffening up could be the acid coming up, then once it goes back down it burns causing her to scream...?

  • The stiffening is after feeding or during? It sounds like she might have either a milk/soy protein allergy (during feeding issues, hives sometimes and mucousy stools) or she could have reflux (after feeding). I would take her in to see the doc to see if they can prescribe something. Not all babies have reflux you can see (via spit up), some have silent reflux so you don't know it's happening and can't easily make the correlation.

  • Your LO might have a lactose intolerance.  That happened with my LO and one of the signs was the eczema.  I have had to stay away from dairy since and it seems to help.  Good Luck.  Hope she feels better soon!

  • My baby has just started to do this as well, I'm sure its gas pains. Perhaps look into whether it could be colic. I bought some gripe water and it worked wonders for my LO. She still stiffens up a few times a day but the screaming has gone down a lot and the gripe water helps get her burps up.

  • You should ask your pedi about this. My LO has the exact same symptoms & after discussing it with his pedi yesterday she said he has a milk/soy allergy. (She tested his poop & confirmed it contained blood not visible to the naked eye which I guess is also a symptom.) I'm starting a new dairy/soy free diet today so we're hoping that will help. He might be ok with soy, but I'm cutting both out first, then will add soy back once he seems to be doing better & see how he handles it. She said most babies grow out of it by 6ish months.

  • Before jumping to the conclusion that it's a sensitivity to milk or soy, you may want to try block feeding in order to rule out the possibility of it being related to a fore-milk versus hind-milk imbalance. If baby gets too much foremilk, they may become gassier than normal and produce green, sometimes slimy poops.

The stiffening up is likely just baby's response to the sudden discomfort. Ever have really bad gas? It hurts! And sometimes the pains come on out of the blue.
