if you're thinking about getting a dog

DO NOT DO IT!  If you don't already have one, no matter how much you LUV dogs, do not get one before your baby comes!

this message brought to you by a 9 year double dog mama veteran whose world revolved around her dogs and all dogs who now is grinding her teeth because they won't shut the eff up!

Re: if you're thinking about getting a dog

  • We were debating a second dog a few months ago. Very glad we held off Smile

  • We have a 3 year old mini doxie that we absolutely adore!  Had him since he was 8 weeks old and he is soooooo great with our 4 kids.  The ONLY thing we cannot stand with him is he barks at any knock or doorbell ring, and won't shut up no matter what for a few minutes.  Now that we have a baby on the way, we have been doing anything to help stop this.  We have been working on it for years but we seriously need to get a trainer to help us with this before the baby is born.  I really hope we don't have to give him away because he is such a great part of our family.  We aren't fans of shock collars (I feel they are cruel), but we have given in to give it a try, seems to work, but when he can't control his bark its the hardest thing to hear and see when he whines from the shock....but his barking has gone down and it has been teaching him from barking.  I just wish there was another way....he is soooooo stubborn about his barking!

My daughter doesn't care about the barking at all.  It sometimes wakes her if she's in my arms in a light sleep.  But in general, she's been used to hearing them bark their faces off since she was in the womb, so she doesn't care about it.

Oh, and she also barks.  Because she hears it so often!  She doesn't even say Mama, but she barks!

  • we have a 3 year old pit who is our BABY- like its ridiculous how we talk to her and coddle her- im nervous when the baby comes- i dont want her to be jealous but i also dont want to just the baby to push the dog out completely- its not fair-

oh man im nervous- i know so many things are gonna change

    lol!

  • My dogs are SO jealous.  They were coddled like your dog up until DD was born.  But now, I treat them...uh...like dogs!  They are still allowed on the couch and have free run of the house.  But they no longer sleep in my bed.  I'd wake up 5-6 times a night (for 8 years) to let them out.  Once DD came, I really needed that sleep.  So the dogs are crated at night now.  And during the day when I'm working.

  • I know everything will change when we actually have our baby, but my H and I are trying to outline a way to make sure our dogs are still getting ample affection. They're a typically jealous breed, but luckily we also have a roommate that loves them, too, and will keep them company if we're both busy. We have two dogs, one that sleeps with us and one that sleeps with our roommate and it might come to a point where both will sleep with him. We're setting up boundaries for both the dogs and the baby, so the dogs don't feel possessive of the baby's space and they have a place to escape to. Dogs don't go in the baby room and the baby won't ever be allowed in the basement where the roommate sleeps/laundry room is.

  • We have 2 dogs also, and they are like our babies. We have a lab mix who is just about 2 years old but still acts like a big puppy. We are a little worried that she will get too excited around the baby and want to lick it or be all over it, but she is so gentle hearted we aren't worried about her being intentionally rough. We also have a Beagle, she is 9 months old and she thinks she rules the house. She is also super sweet, so besides being overly excited we aren't really too worried about our dogs.

  • Your lab mix might surprise you! My mom's dog is a lab and I had my god son come over once...he took exceptional care with him and let him do whatever to him like pat his butt and use him as a pillow and if he gave him anything, the dog would gently take it (food or toys or what have you). They're smart dogs!

  • We have a Lab and know she'll be great with the kid once s/he comes.  We took her--at 6 months--to go see our five nieces and nephews who range in age from 5 down to 10 months (two sisters, three kids from one, two from the other).  Macie did such a great job and now when we walk her around the neighborhood, she's so gentle with the kids who want to say hi.

One of my sisters had a dog before she had kids.  The other one always wanted a dog, but now that she has kids, won't get a dog.  If you want a dog, I'd get one before you have kids, otherwise it will be years before you do.

  • We have three dogs, just adopted the 3rd one a few months before we found out about the baby. They are all totally our kids and babied all the time. I hope they're not too jealous, and they are miniature schnauzers so they bark a lot. My cousin had the same thing with his kid, and they don't try to be quiet or anything while she is sleeping so she has gotten used to the noise. We are going to try the same thing, hopefully it works for us too!

The good thing was, DD only woke up 2-3 times a night and that was a cakewalk compared to how often I got up with the dogs!

  • let them out 5 times per night? what? Doggies can hold their business for many many hours!

We just have one doggie and were going to get another but decided to hold off due to all the extra vet bills etc. And maybe we'll wait til LO is old enough to enjoy a new puppy.

Our Berner is just great with kids, he is a gentle giant and i'm sure he will be just fine. In fact he'll be so happy the first 3 months as I'll be at home all the time! We love him to bits and we certainly won't be forgetting all about him when the baby comes along. Have plenty of love for babies and doggies.

He isn't a barker so that won't be an issue and he will still get his walkies except mommy will also be pushing a stroller or wearing a bjorn.

I can't wait to introduce our little one to our big furry guy!

Yeah, it was definitely a learned behavior.
