I saw a mosquito bite DS on Monday right above his eye brow. A mosquito had gotten in the car and while DH was driving I was turning around to play with DS. So, I saw the bite happen, and I know exactly when it happened. Anyway, yesterday morning DS's eye lid was red and slightly swollen. By lunch time is was a little more puffy, enough for me to call the pedi and make sure I was giving enough Benadryl and make sure there wasn't anything else I should do. The nurse assured me he was ok, that I was doing what I should be doing and that as long as it didn't get worse, he didn't start messing with it, he didn't lose his appetite, or start running a fever, he was ok. She told me that if it got worse to call back and if it wasn't better by the morning to call and make an appointment. I kept giving Benadryl as instructed (1 tsp every 6 hours). I took him with me to get my haircut by DH's cousin in the afternoon (that's a whole other story because there was someone else that was supposed to be able to supervise him while I got my hair cut), and then we came home and DS went down for a late nap. An hour later he woke up with his eye almost swollen shut! I FREAKED OUT! We ended up in urgent care, and DS is now on steroids and antibiotics because the doctor was afraid that the bite might have become infected. I was just so scared by how quickly it became that swollen!
Has anyone else experienced that with their LO? Have subsequent mosquito (or other bug) bites been just as bad or worse? Now I'm afraid to let him play outside because of stupid mosquitos ![]()
Oh, and DH thinks DS had a reaction to something else and that's why it got swollen so quickly. Like maybe he was already reacting to the bite and then he rubbed something else on his eye that cause an even more severe reaction or just irritated the eye further (like hair product from DH's cousin's hair shop floor.....). Would that make any sense though?
Re: Anyone else's LO Have a Reaction to Mosquito Bites?
I believe that a reaction to a mosquito bite is an allergic reaction, to which we each react differently. My DD (who is 14 years old) has always had strong reactions to mosquito bites. A bite will turn in to a 1" diameter welt. They are very itchy and painful for her. She has had to use perscription topical oinments before, but not very often.
I hope you LO feels better soon!
