Military Families

dual military/dual branch families?

So, my husband is AD Army, and I am AD Air Force.  We are currently stationed in Germany together, but are looking at orders in the near future.  We should be getting stateside order, or I should be at least as my window for overseas has closed now.  Have any of you had any issues staying together?  Or do the branches try to work together to keep you together?  We have been told they will work together, but we all know how well that sometimes works out.  The one issue is that there is only a small handfull of stateside bases where we can be put together due to our jobs.  I am in CE, and he is a combat medic.

Re: dual military/dual branch families?

  • My husband and I are both Active Duty Army and there is a program called Army Married Couples Program that we enrolled in that allows us to be stationed together when possible. I am not sure if there are similar programs for when the service members are in different branches but I would definitely look into it.

This is the same for us.  I think it crosses branches but OP might have to look into it.  Good luck!

  • We're dual military, but I deal with dual branch families all the time (I teach at a joint tech school).  Getting stationed as close together as possible is what personnel tries to do, but it ultimately depends on both your jobs, where you can be stationed and what's available.

My advice is to call your assignment manager at AFPC, or have your supervisor call.  Being the squeaky wheel in their ear is totally worth it when you're trying to keep your family together.

  • We are both AD Air Force, and I know that after we were married we had to go to the MPF and sign a form choosing the option to be stationed together. I was also advised to CHECK again later, to ensure that both of us were still under the same option just in case our paperwork was messed up.

I don't know how it works for different branches, but definitely check with whoever does assignments or personnel issues to make sure that you do get what you want!

  • I'm just lurking here; this is my first time posting.  I don't know if you guys get base of preference, but Colorado Springs is a good choice for a mil/mil couple.  Ft. Carson is here as well as 3 Air Force bases.  I worked in the CE squadron before I got out last year; It is a pretty nice base. Good Luck!

  • We filled out all of the Join Spouse paperwork, but also know its not automatic.  Its a if we can we will thing.  I was just wondering if anyone from two different branches had any issues, but thanks for all of your answers!

  • we're both AD Navy and they do keep us together since we're on the same coast. it's far too expensive to move either of us elsewhere. i don't know specifically for Army/AF and how they work as far as funding goes, but i'd guess it'd be the same.. it seems too expensive to have you guys stationed in separate places. i hope this works out for you guys!
