Overreacting???

Hey ladies, I just can't get this off my mind and I don't know what I should do... This will be DS#2 and I had a c/s with #1. My hospital doesn't do VBACs so we are going for another c/s. At the beginning of my pregnancy the Dr. told me that my surgery would be scheduled somewhere around my 39th week (12 Oct). Their only scheduled OR day is Tuesday so I would technically only be 38 weeks 6 days on that Tuesday. I was told when I scheduled my 32 week appointment that I would be scheduling my surgery during that appointment. Well the OR schedule wasn't open yet and was reassured of the same week for surgery. So, I asked again yesterday if it was open and still NO! Then the tech tells me that the Dr. was looking at doing it the day before my due date but will confirm during my 36 week appointment on the 20th! I seriously wanted to cry! I didn't make it to my due date with my son so why in the hell do they assume I will make it with this one. I know every pregnancy/delivery is different but really! He didn't even give me a reason why he is wanting to push it a week. I am really bothered by this because #1 I still don't have a surgery date and have 6 weeks left, #2 I feel he doesn't even want to talk about scheduling the surgery. I already think it's crazy to schedule a baby's birth as it is because I am firm believer that it will come when it's ready. I also wonder what they do for those people who don't turn 39 weeks on Tuesday's? Do they make them wait or do they just schedule it anyway because it's only a few days. I just really don't want to stress my body out anymore than it needs to be by going in to labor all because he wants to be dumb! VENT OVER!

  • i thought they usually scheduled rcs for the week before in hopes to prevent you from going into labor.  I'm all for babies coming when they are ready but I think having a rcs complicates that a little and it is surgery so they want to schedule is as opposed to waiting for you to go into labor.

  • My OB is only scheduled in the OR once a week.  So the only time during my 39th week was 2 days before my due date. The practice will not schedule you before 39 weeks (unless you have a serious issue). I went into labor with my son 4 days before my due date and delivered him the day before my due date. Because of my experience with my 1st, I have made a back up plan in case I go into labor before my c/s.  If I do go into labor anytime except a Wednesday afternoon I will get an on call OB and not my OB.  If I do go into labor before my c/s, I'll just go to the hospital and they'll perform it then- no sense in worrying over something you can't control.

I do not think that OBs are being dumb for only scheduling c/s during the 39th week.  It not only is beneficial for the baby (in most cases), but it helps protect them from sue-happy people that look for any reason to sue them.  You would be amazed at the horrible things patients do to their Drs to try to get $.

  • I work in L&D...for us, we are only have room to schedule 4 c/s per day.  Some doctors schedule them months and months and months in advance.  Other schedule them a few weeks before.  Sometimes there's no room, so the patient has to wait until there is a slot.  At our hospital, you have to be 39 weeks for a regular RCS.  That only leave 7 days till your due date so the chances of getting it ON the day your 39 weeks is hit and miss.  If you show up to the hospital in labor or with ruptured membranes, they'll do it then (obviously).  I wouldn't worry about it.  Maybe there's a reason he's not telling you...that's the only thing I can think of.

  • Don't be stressed about it. You can't keep the baby in forever so you will eventually have a date set. My OB doesn't scheduled for delivery before 39w unless there is a medical reason. They usually don't schedule the c/s until a week or two before then. I "lucked" out by scheduling it at 19w because the date I chose had a special meaning to me and my dr would basically do anything for me during my last pregnancy.

  • I would just discuss with your OB what happens if you go into labor before your scheduled RCS.  My practice also won't schedule before 39 weeks - I actually prefer to do it as close to my EDD as possible because DD was so late that I have few concerns I'd go into labor early - but that is one thing I will ask about, since the uncertainty of what will happen if I go into labor first would make me anxious, especially if I thought it was a distinct possibility.

  • I would ask your doctor.

Either way try not to stress about it.  I know it's hard, but try to relax and enjoy these last few weeks of pregnancy.

  • If you go into labor before your c/s, they will just do a c/s at that point.  Deep breaths. You will be fine!

  • They let me wait until my 40th week, but I don't think they will let you schedule before 39 weeks unless there is a medical reason.

  • I'm sorry your OB isn't being more straight with you.  It's a new standard of practice that OBs aren't supposed to induce or do a c/s before 39 weeks.  This helps assure that the baby's lungs are mature enough and ready for life on the outside.  There were a lot of c/s's and inductions going on at 37 weeks since technically, 37 weeks is term, and a lot of the babies were having to go the NICU to be on oxygen and such because some just weren't ready to be born yet.

Don't stress.  My DS was born at exactly 38 weeks because I went into labor on my own and he was fine.  My c/s was scheduled for 1 day before my due date because I wanted to see if my body would go into labor on it's own and I figured if it didn't, the baby should be ready to come out anyway.  At least that's how I justified it to myself!  Try to think if it that way, if any of my ramblings make sense!
