Out of pocket cost for delivery?

The November board is starting to get worried about the actual cost of delivering our little ones in a hospital, and I was hoping you ladies would be willing to either confirm the fears or help calm everyone down.  How much of your delivery bill did you have to pay out of pocket for? TIA :)

  • I have the same question... I have yet to see my bills!

  • It's not THAT much but it's not terribly cheap. It really depends on your insurance. I think I'm about $1800 for my delivery, not including my LO's 2 1/2 week NICU stay. And that includes the cost of the epidural and circumcision.

  • Mine was about 4K after our crappy self-employed insurance covered their share. The upside is we've almost hit our 5K deductible..lol.

We have an HSA that paid for those costs.

Not too bad all in all. Could be better. Could be worse.

  • I live in CA and have an HMO and have had to pay $0 out of pocket. It definitely varies greatly depending on insurance. I did receive my hospital statement and the bill was over $12,000 but I wasn't billed for any portion.

Maybe make a call to your insurance and speak to a representative and ask how much they usually cover. Wont get any exact answers but may help give you a guesstimate!

Congrats and wishing you a speedy, safe delivery!

  • I just added ours up.  $2700.64 total out of pocket.  Priciest parts were room & board, the epidural, and the MW's fee.

November babies have an advantage since moms are pregnant and will give birth all in the same calendar year.  I had a July baby, so we got hit with a 2010 AND 2011 deductible.

  • Depends on your insurance....My H's insurance is terrible... his deductible is 11,500.   I think once we hit 5,000 we started to get reimbursement checks for 70% also work at the hospital (on call) where I delivered, so I get 50% off all my bills.  My guess is we'll pay about 3,500.

  • There's a thread on the July '11 about this right now. [Link]

  • $532 but that will be reimbursed from the hra fund. DH is a firefighter.

  • my deduct for everything was 600.00.. I called the insurance company and for example,  (can't remember exact numbers  but ) my c/s delivery was 8254.00 and say my insurance only paid 7900.00, they wrote all the extras off for me... don't know why.... can't hurt to ask your insurance company...all my out of pocket was 600.00 and my total bill was just under 20k

  • For all of my prenatal care, including my delivery and hospital stay from a c/s, I paid one co-pay of $20. We're extremely lucky to have great insurance.

  • I should add, my deductible is $300, and after that, 90% is covered.  So my $2700 total is my two $300 deductibles (2010 and 2011) and 10% of the rest.  We had estimated $1700....

  • $0 - we have good maternity coverage.
  • I got a bill from the hospital for $500....I'm not sure if I'm getting one seperate from my OB though.  The total was over 24,000 before insurance though.

  • It really really depends on your insurance. And how much your doctor and hospital charges. And whether you get a c-section, or an epidural, etc.

That being said, I have a pretty high deductible of 2,500, and an out of pocket max of 3,000, at which point insurance pays 100%. So I paid 3,000, there's basically no way it would have been cheaper. And there's no way it would have been more! The nice thing is that now I've hit my max for the year which means every medical thing I do now through next June is covered 100%, including rxs and co-pays. Oh yeah, and there is a healthfund of 1,000 provided to us, so I guess we only paid 2,000 for me.

Also, don't forget that the baby will have their own bills. In my case, she has the same high deductible of 2,500, so we paid the full 1,800 that was billed for her care in the hospital.

I know it seems like a lot and other insurance plans cover more, but we basically don't even pay for our plan, the premium taken out of my husbands check is literally $2 a month. And like I said, I won't be paying for anything else through next June! Also, 2,000 for me and 1,800 for her is much better than the more than 20,000 that was billed!!

  • Wow, I'm really jealous of everyone's great insurance!  Good for you guys.  Don't take it for granted.  I have a 1500 deductible that I'll have to meet plus LO's 1500 deductible and then I'll owe 20% of everything else.  I'm guessing it will be close to 5K before it's all said and done.  Which ironically is the out of pocket max.

  • We paid $0, but the bill for both LO and me was a combined about $10,000 with no pain meds for delivery and a circumcision for DS.

For all my Dr appts, blood work, and ultrasounds we paid $60 but I don't know what the combined cost was.

We are lucky to have good insurance.  Hopefully knowing the cost will help you to determine how much you would pay under your insurance plan.

  • Delivery copay of 250, and 500 deductible, so 750 in all.

  • about 1600 dollars.

I was pretty happy about it. The hospital set up a bill pay for us. So, we pay 120 a month till it is paid off.

  • $350 hospital fee, that is what my insurance charges for any hospital admission... paid $20 out of pocket for all prenatal care, including genetic testing, NST's 2x/weel, weekly u/s starting at 36w... we have great insurance, the only downfall is that I am only allowed to go to 1 hospital.

  • We have not so awesome insurance, but since I  only work part time and don't make much we qualified for a 60% discount on the remainder of our bill. We got DD's portion, and are still waiting on mine. We are guessing the grand total will be about $3,000. I stayed in the hospital 2 days, didn't have an epidural, and we didn't pay any copays, or for a NST or the first time we went to the hospital thinking I was in labor.

  • My co pay was 300. Combined our total bill wa 90000 but dd was 5 weeks early and we were both in the hospital for a week. Thank god for insurance
  • I only had to pay a $10 copay.  I work at the hospital where I delivered, so my insurance covers 100% of all expenses for medical services done within the hospital.

  • I have BCBS my plan is as follows: I have no deductible, pay 10% of hospital charges and a personal out of pocket max of $1000 and a family out of pocket max of $2000. I had a natural delivery with no pain meds and was in the hospital for a total of 4 days (was in labor for over 27 hours from when my water broke). In total we paid about $1500. I reached my $1000 out of pocket max so anything else for me this year will be covered 100% and we are almost at our family max so it we reach that then we wont have to pay anything for anyone in our family for the rest of the year. There are so many variables!
  • I had a uncomplicated vaj birth with a interthecal (sp?) and only stayed one night in the hosptial...my bills totalled about $7k and we paid $300.00.

    Circ was a extra $75 co-pay.

    * you can call your insurance ahead of time and find out what you are expected to pay*

  • Nada, gotta love military insurance.  Well, sometimes:)

Same here. My insurance covered 100%. I just had to pay a $10 copay for my first office visit to the OB. My bill to the insurance was around $14,000 though. That includes an epidural with a vaginal delivery and no NICU. I called my insurance when I was pregnant and she told me the percentage they would pay but if it weren't 100% paid they would not have been able to tell me how much I would have to pay out of pocket. That depends on your delivery.
